kryptonjohn: Braky-stabby drivers are a real problem for me. My wife does this so basically I *never* ride as passenger with her driving open road. If they follow traffic too close it magnifies the problem. I try to stay back a bit so as they constantly speed up and slow down it doesn't force me to do the same and I get from Auckland to Whangamata with engine braking and hardly a touch of the brake pedal despite the twisty mountain range crossing.

I have a friend who is either on or off and you try to tell him that he drives like absolute trash and wastes petrol but won't have a bar of it. "Every tried keeping the same following distance bro?"
He doesn't believe he does it, But when you point out that on a flat road (Waipu straights) that he is 50m behind someone then 10m then 50m again surely they must click..

I generally drop back 50-60m just before an over taking lane when people are doing 8-90 and put my indicator on early and cruise past them at 110-115 then they fall in behind me and I button off to 105 once I have passed them all.

I also have to have a clear road in front of me, I never overtake without over taking lanes unless its clear open road for a long distance. Hate it.

The amount of idiots you sit behind that are fluctuating between 90-110 its astounding. Then I'll pass them and they will sit behind me the whole way. I always have a massive tail of cars who refuse to over take me from AKL to WHG. Even when its a clear over taking lane and I'm doing 100 90% will stay behind me happily.

Every time I drive by, I think it's the police and have a panic attack. I have to take my foot off the accelerator, toss my beer, fasten my seat belt, throw my phone on the floor, turn my radio down, push the gun under the seat and put my clothes back on.

Don't forget all the songs they play on the radio that have sirens in them. Should be illegal as whenever I hear a siren on the radio (and it's not so obvious that it's coming from the radio) I always frantically look around expecting to see emergency services that I need to make room for.

The one my car has is good, especially for keeping to 50 KM/H going through the scattered "through-towns" of NZ after being traveling at 100 KM/H for a good while.

BUT, going up or down a hill it will tend to be a little too enthusiastic and I have seen it deviate from its setting by quite a lot several times. More than enough to have gotten me a ticket.

My 2nd car is like that, down hill it doesn't brake. My car, it's great, even though it's a 2010 model. On the Ngauranga Gorge it drops to 80 for the camera, if my cruise control is at 100, and I drop it to 80 km for the camera section it holds me there and actively (engine) brakes as needed.

I trend to set cruise control to ensure I am steadily covering ground and to ensure I don't get a ticket.

On cruise control you quickly see how much the speed of most other drivers oscillates.

On winding sections I don't use cruise control as I like to adjust the throttle slightly into and out of corners.

I generally find most people are good at letting faster traffic past. The exceptions seem to be campervans and drivers who (subconsciously I believe) speed up on straights and passing lanes.

Yep, I agree. You can keep up a really good average speed without driving at crazy speeds if you drive at a consistent pace and get good fuel consumption as a bonus.

I give it half an hour before this thread stoops into a pointless discussion over 'quotas', tourist drivers, 'I know my car and my driving skill so I should be able to go quicker than that', comments about other driving behaviour which is *never* targeted and all the other jazz which always derails discussion even remotely connected to law/policy/driving.

As OP said, this is bulk standard now and has been for years. Anyone who gets a ticket deserves it, end of story.

On a similar vane, NZTA has lowered the Speed limit's on some roads. Limits dropping from 100km/h to 80km/h

NZ Transport Agency lowers speed limits on North Island highways

The NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) has lowered the speed limits of seven North Island areas after communities expressed their concerns about their safety.

Effective immediatley, the speed limits will decrease for stretches of roads at Puhoi, Kaukapakapa, Pukenui and Houhora.

"We are grateful to the many people who've given us feedback as this demonstrates the lower speed limits will clearly be welcomed by the communities," NZTA's system design mangager Brett Gliddon said.

At Puhoi, north Auckland, the 80km/h speed limit on State Highway 1 through Johnstones Hill tunnel will be extended north to the Puhoi Rd intersection, down from 100km/h.

The speed limit from SH1 to the 50km/h zone in Puhoi village will also fall from 100km/h to 80km/h.

In northwest Auckland, a new limit of 80km/h will be extended north of North Cres to west of Kanohi Rd on SH16 at Kaukapakapa.

South of Kaukapakapa village, the exisiting 50km/h zone will be extended southeast of Opoto Pl on SH16 and the stretch of road south of Opoto Pl will decrease from 100km/h to 80km/h until after Henley Rd.

In Houhora, Far North, an 80km/h speed limit will be put in place on SH1 south of Saleyard Ave to north of Harbour View Rd. A 50km/h speed limit will be introduced north of Harbour View Rd to south of Harbour View Rd for the Pukenui community as well.

Gliddon said the residents had expressed concerns that the legal speed limits in their areas were too high and they were concerned for their safety.

"Reducing speed limits and making the road and roadside more forgiving of human error reduces the risk of crashes and limits their severity," he said.

The radar uses Doppler effect to be able to calculate your speed.

Since mid November / early December Ive seen three new speed cameras come online in areas of Auckland I frequently drive in. It is hard to not believe that they were aiming to get these cameras up in time for the reduced speed limits in order to maximise revenue. Surely if they wanted people to lower their speed they would have advertised their changes in the speed tolerances a lot wider but geekzone is the only place I have come across it.

Also came across a speed camera van today that I think is new as all of the other ones I have seen used to have small rectangular sensors of some kind by the rear bumper (which made them easily identifiable) but this was the first one Ive seen that didnt have that...just the camera visible inside.
