I’ve lived here for 14 years and I can genuinely say that I’ve never queued for breath screening. Indeed, I doubt I’ve even been breath tested more than once every 2 years.

I’ve lived here for 14 years and I can genuinely say that I’ve never queued for breath screening. Indeed, I doubt I’ve even been breath tested more than once every 2 years.

to be fair, richms lives in auckland... we have a fair few more drivers on the road.

Well that sucks.

We rarely even see police cars except when they come over on their occasional jolly. I think there is some sort of driving assessment they have to do - we usually get 4 - 6 cars that stop for lunch in the village and then can be seen around the area for a couple of hours then they go again never to be seen until the next time!

The only breath test they seem to do as a regular thing here is for Toast Martinborough, and anyone who drinks and drives on that day is so dumb they deserve to lose their licence on the grounds of stupidity if nothing else!

I had to queue for a random drink test - it was about 6pm on a Thursday night on a random road in Dunedin.

Took about 10 minutes of waiting and 10 seconds to count to 5 before they waved me away

That is getting quite extreme for a delay, worst I have had has been about 4 mins up to mcdonalds, and then 7 or so on the return trip because I went a different road and they had fewer cops doing it there and it seems more cars going thru. Still adds heaps to a quick trip up the road to get food that would normally be a 10 min round trip.

I believe that ACC used to fund a certain number of random tests. That seemed to lead to Police meeting their tzrgets by random testing at convenient hours for them rather than when drivers may have actually been drinking. Maybe that's changed, I haven't seen a checkpoint in ages, used to regularly get them at the end of Oriental Bay in Wellington late afternoon.

My impression has been that breath testing is done at times and places chosen to have the maximum impact on drivers (not drunk drivers). So, for example, Monday afternoon of Labour weekend just north of Waiouru, to catch people returning home from a long weekend away. My guess is that it's done this way for maximum visibility for minimum cost, the aim being to create fear of breath-testing rather than to actually catch drunk drivers.

What are you talking about?

Some peoples compass needle isn't pointing in the right direction? Why would laws like this need to be enacted if it wasn't so? Which would you rather have? Good people and bad laws or bad people and good laws? I know which one I'd want.
