Thanks Dickytim and martyyn. Found that the euro car dealer in CHCH sells oil filters on Trade Me. Got a genuine VAG oil filter from them for $30 delivered. Will probably get some semi-syn (Magnatec probably) for the first oil replacement in my (new to me) Golf Mk5 2005 2.0FSI this weekend, and then next time push it onto fully synthetic (VW recommends this).

I forgot that the warehouse sells Magnatec, has a better price than either SCA or Repco at the moment.

As most have alluded to, assuming you are getting a good or bad car based on brand is a bit flawed, but to me as I mentioned previously it is usually a pretty bad idea to buy the first generation of a model. To me this is a key consideration in the car you buy.

Business partner had one, great until you have to do the cambelt where they pretty much take the whole engine out, and empty your wallet.

I would avoid.

Cambelts on any car are expensive to replace. Instead b buy a car with a cam chain

All the cars I have had to replace them on both jap and European have been. What cars was only a few hundred. Even a Ford festival cost the at least 500

Some Hiluxs including surfs are only about $200-250 at a dealer.
Just pays to check, not buying a car because its belt driven is not really the best way to choose.
Not all chains are maintenance free either

Toyotas are generally quite cheap to maintain, but that sounds very cheap for a dealer. I thought many toyota now used chains. I know the Rav4 does. Chain cam belt defiatenly wouldn't be the only consideration, but it is certainly one consideration to look at. For my last European car it was over 1k to replace the cam belt and that was quite a few years ago, so it will likely be a lot more now. It largely comes down to how easy it is to access in the engine.

Yeah they have been going back to chains for a while now.
Yes access is the major thing, also the number and type of tensioners
