One thing that strikes me about parking fines in Wellington, with which Mr Visser's comments in this forum are entirely consistent, is that the wardens are not there to enforce parking laws but to revenue gather. I have seen occasions when wardens have the opportunity to ask someone to move but instead do not and simply opt for issuing a ticket.

I have often wondered what the terms and conditions are for the contract between WCC and Tenix but there is no information on the council website and of course Tenix could claim commercial confidence (which is fairly bogus as the only real commercial term would be the remuneration and not what and how Tenix is expected to operate).

Mr Visser says "Absolutely agree that we must also have the personal contact from wardens". Is this actually mentioned in the contract? Does the WCC give guidelines to Tenix on this personal contact? From what I have seen of the wardens, personal contact is not a priority.

While we as the ratepayers/residents of NZ have given the city council the power to impose such fines, it would be nice to see some greater clarity on the council's attitude to parking and how it translates to the relationship with Tenix. I have no problem if the WCC were to be aggressively anti-car from a policy perspective but it needs to be clearly communicated and admitted openly.

StarBlazer: Gehenna makes a good point - why can you not have designated pick-up/drop-off areas around the city in the same way as at the airport?

Can you tell me where the pick up area is at Wellington airport - as far as I have known there isn't one? I am told there is a "grace" period in the car park but I don't trust anyone called Grace let alone ones that have periods.

For years with the help of cell phones I have been picking people up from the upper level drop off area with 5 second stops and escaping before the attendant can reach us. A problem people picking me up from airports around the world never seem to have to face (just talking cruise by pickups of type like the original poster, not parking up outside the terminal).

Perhaps this not being able to stop and pick people up off roadside in city and airport is a Wellington thing. Does anywhere else in the world have these camera cars?

That's basically it - they call it the arrival pick up "lane" - I would park off-site and wait for a call from whoever you are picking up!

To the best of my knowledge there is no grace period - 0-29 minutes from $3.50 - see below - which is not going to break the bank - albeit annoying.

Unless something has changed recently the only one I know of at Wellington is the drop off at the departure level with portable signs that pick ups are not allowed (and I know people who have been "growled at" for picking up there).

Maybe something has changed recently or there is somewhere else? I'll be out there again in a couple of days and will check to see if the signs are still there.

Wellington is fortunate there are plenty of nice off site places to park that are only a couple of minutes away Lyall Bay, Evans Bay Marina area, Golf Club car park

Interesting - their own web site refers to the "arrivals pick up lane". If you look at the following link under the question "Is there a bike rack at the airport?" it answers;

Q. Is there a bike rack at the airport?
A. Yes there is a bike rack at the airport which is found outside level 0 entrance, on the island between the taxi and arrivals pick up lane.

I've not tried to use the pick up lane - normally I've just parked and paid the ransom - perhaps a phone call to them would be in order - make sure you get their name

Seems the airport bit has been covered before in detail here http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=48&topicid=55653 .

There are no drive through pickups allowed anywhere - arrival level is taxis, etc only and from what I remember (been a while since I used taxis there) they drive out through barrier arms now too so might be tricky (and undoubtedly a fee) if one got entangled in that with a private car.

The claim is made WCC is making hay where they can in the local crowded streets due to people "parked" waiting in them.
