Technofreak:

This rukus from EV and PHEV owners about the issue with the online RUC purchases insinuating it's all to do with the wave of RUC purchases from EV owners shows to me how totally wrapped up EV owners are in their world.

Have a look around and take note of how many vehicles there are on our roads that require RUCs and then think about how that number compares to EV numbers.

A lot of cars, SUVs etc are diesel and pretty well any thing bigger than a Ute is a diesel.

There are 818,324 Light diesel vehicles (2020 data), and about 150,000 heavy vehicles (which, other than electric which is exempt until December 31, 2025 pay RUC regardless of fuel).

Lets assume on average they by RUC's twice a year (noting much of the heavy fleet don't buy through the regular system using an eroad or similar instead, and for light vehicles the transaction fees are a decent chunk so people tend to buy larger blocks), and it is evenly distributed across the year. That works out to 37,000 transactions a week.

There are approximately 107,000 Light EV's & PHEV's in the fleet. lets assume half of them buy RUC in the last 7 days of the amnesty period. that's 53,500 Transactions in a week (on top of the regular 37,000 transactions). So about 244% of regular demand. That's enough to stress most system's.

My previous employer swapped all light vehicles to eroads and this did take the ruc labels off all the diesels.

While I am totally for paying RUCs the thing that gutted me is, how much we drive our EV!!! Makes a far bigger dent in our budget than I anticipated.

I'm guessing most EV owners will find this. Paying RUCs will more than triple their per km cost for those that predominantly home charge. Still around half the cost of fuelling an ICEV but still a significant change for many EV owners.

What I actually meant was that it showed me what our monthly mileage was. It was about 1000km more than I would have expected ;-)

That's got to be a bit annoying. Roads do need to be paid for though.

Yes to both; I bought 5000km for both our cars in the last week of April and I have already bought a second lot of 3000km for both (having done about 4000km for each since).

Umm, maybe leaving it until 29 hours before D-day to buy RUCs for both our cars was a dumb idea! Spinning wheel of death on the website at moment; will try again later tonight and, if no luck then, first thing tomorrow.

It’s only been a couple of years since I had to buy RUCs for my last ICE car, but it is still a bit of shock forking over such amounts in a single payment - especially in the context of the typical costs of running an EV.

I know it’s been mentioned before but that regressive admin fee is so going to hurt those that don’t have the money up-front to buy a decent number of units: it amounts to 14% of the total cost if purchasing the minimum of 1k. But never fear, such individuals can make use of the generous tax cuts that were announced today to pay for that, I’m sure…

We just went to the post office and stumped up the extra admin fee. We saved far more than the admin fee leaving it to the last minute. Also costs more to pay on credit card.

We need to do our second one tomorrow but we are 100km from the round thousand so I'm taking it to work to get us to a round number to make remembering a bit easier. Planning to buy in round numbers from now on to make life easier remembering.

What do you mean you've saved far more than leaving it to the last min?

~$13 admin fee = 13/76*1000 km = 171 km, so presumably @everettpsycho has driven more than that between 1/4/2024-30/5/2024.

Slightly OT but I have a BYD Atto3. The app for the car shows the number of km's driven. I wonder how hard would it to write an app that allows you to enter the number of km's you bought and it compares that with what you have driven and then pops up a reminder to buy more. You of course should be able to select a delta value to take into account the time it might take for NZTA to process your payment. Even better if NZTA exposed the services to renew the RUC as a web service the app could even buy a renewal for you automatically :-)

I didn't realise there is no admin fee if you collect your RUC in person. That's significant in the context of this discussion.

NZTA says: You'll also need to pay one admin fee for each licence bought. The admin fee is $12.44 if you buy your licence online, or $13.71 at an agent.
