khull: Never realised that getting a high credit limit was a feature thing to have :)

Really? If it wasn't, the Amex Centurion would be a hard sell...!
...

I believe that's a Charge Card though, most of the credit limits discussion here revolves around Credit Cards.

Most AMEX charge can't don't have set limits, but rather "spend management". I've had Amex corporate charge cards in the past with no limits.

Yep and corporate,Platinum/Centurion spends will vary depending on their tiers. They essentially have a soft upper limit as you have to pay the balance at end of each period. Which is what people should be doing with their credit cards anyway. Having high credit card limits however, is just like epeen speak.

According to ConsumerNZ the average spend for NZ is $12k pa on credit cards. I personally think this is flawed but in absence of other reports, it is no where near the high limits the banks are prepared to offer.

For most people who pay their cards off monthly, an Amex charge card isn't all that practical. Amex isn't accepted in nearly as many places as Visa/Mastercard (who don't do charge cards), therefore, having a non-Amex credit card with a high limit is useful for things like travelling.

With my corporate Amex charge card, every now and then I would have to use a personal Visa card to pay for work stuff and claim it back, because whoever I was paying didn't take Amex. My bank here in Oz issues me with a Mastercard and an Amex on the same account. One statement to pay, but for places where I can use the Amex, I get 3x as many reward points. This, to me, brings together the best of all worlds as even tho I have a credit limit far in excess of what I typically use, I don't go out and spend it all without being able to pay it back.

It's funny how things fall out of fashion. I remember back in the 70's my father commonly using his Diners Club to pay for all sorts of things when we travelled on holiday but these days you rarely see the cards. Same with Amex outside the USA - used to be hugely popular but far less so now I get the impression.

I think Amex (in the credit card space) has had a resurgence through bank issued cards. Still many places don't take it tho (due to higher merchant fees) and Diners are so uncommon that most businesses don't bother. Even in the US I have found plenty of places that don't want to take Amex.

Westpac used to offer an Amex card free with their Hotpoints MasterCard - similar story with higher points earn for things put through the Amex, but both cards come through on the same bill. Looks like they have dropped that offering though, may have coincided with the AirNZ tie-up.

Amex offers a no-fee credit card directly at the moment, with an earn rate of $50 = 1APD. Not accepted everywhere, but with no annual fee there's no downside to having one in your wallet and using it when you can

That's why I got one, plus if you spend $300 in the first 3 months you get 50APD. Also, I no longer have to borrow someone else's card for any amex concert presales! ;)

I'm pretty sure when I applied it was just $100 = 1APD, when did they change it? OK, looks like that's just for Air NZ spends and otherwise, it is $100.

My ANZ card finally arrived after they sent it to my old address (on file with card makers!)

But seems the timer was not reset for the bonus $200A (that others are handing you)

Wonder if paying the remaining $600 on my BNZ one would count toward the spend total eligible for the bonus :P

freitasm: Nope, I wasn't offered anything.

Did you already apply for another card?

Likewise, I had no tier upgrades offered. I did apply for the Westpac card about 2 weeks ago and cancelled my BNZ card last week.

Nice surprise when I checked my Airpoints account today. I've been upgraded to Elite. I was still 70 points away from retaining Gold as at the start of the week.

Now, here's hoping my client books me with Air NZ/Star Alliance for some of my trips to the UK and Europe in the upcoming months.

If you can't laugh at yourself then you probably shouldn't laugh at others.

The one where new signups are given a bonus $200A if you spend $1000 (or 1500..) in the first 3 months. Starts at time of approval and dispatch, not when you start using it.

As a result, I had it a week before my first months invoice was sent out. (nearly 3 weeks of not able to use)

Got my BNZ replacement card yesterday, no longer GlobalPlus.

It appears they have something with Flybuys coming in June.

Has anyone received anything about what's the cash back rate on these new BNZ cards? Or a link to this information please?
