We have developed a new rule for Auckland driving, my wife takes the controls at the Bombay Hills and keeps it until we are clear of Auckland. Coming the other way she will take the con from around Matakana. This works a breeze and BP and stress levels are lowered considerably.

Or just have a really good sound system and good music and prepare to take a long time.

Nah it's more entertaining listening to my wife driving tourettes. My sons reckon they learnt more swear words from their mothers driving than they ever did during their time in the Army. :P

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

I have to drive from Gulf Harbour into town tomorrow for a 9am conference. I'm budgeting two hours - hopefully enough.

I might use the bus lanes - the buses wont be!

I will be taking the ferry from West Harbour. Not risking it.

MikeB4: Driving from Devonport to the Esmonde Street intersection took a crazy amount of time at around 2 pm. The time it took us to drive that I could have driven from Wellington to Upper Hutt.

Try it again in a couple of years when both sides of Lake Road are 3 to 5 storey apartment blocks.  There will be a few thousand extra cars on the road, not as easy as your trip was1

Many eople in Devonport / Hauraki seem to be a bit thick about taking up public transport. Their cars clearly aren't their friends. . and they bought a house down a peninsula with only one road in and out.

I know a lot of these people fancy themselves as being pretty clever.... But all the evidence says they aren't.... Really.. If they insist on driving in and out daily. .

I rarely go to Devonport for ANY reason.... Never mind actually live there and try to drive elsewhere everyday.

I know a lot of Bayswater people get the ferry to the city. More onto it.

Prepare for chaos on Auckland motorways tomorrow, with a large number of bus services being off the road due to strikes for 24hrs.

Thankfully someone in my office lives down the road from me and drives in, so will get lift with him but suspect it'll be long trip due to extra traffic on the roads compensating for the buses....

Last time there was a major  bus strike on here in Auckland the motorways were much better without them weaving in and out of the traffic.  They seem to think that "Mite is Rite"  and to hell with the road rules..

On a side note.  Will we be able to use the bus lanes or will AT still post their video camera tax collectors at their usual spots to make some more revenue??

No, you cannot use the dedicated bus lanes, there are still some bus services running that will be using them.

My coping mechanisms:

  1. Starting and finishing my working day at the tail end of the peaks - to avoid the worst of it.
  2. Owning a car I enjoy driving.
  3. Decent stereo to pass the time.
  4. Patience to accept that sometimes its gonna be sh*te.
  5. Living in a place that makes the trip worth it i.e. Beachlands.
  6. And a Plan B for when traffic gets superbad i.e. to start using the Ferry Service again.
