There is a_lot of lane changing after the tunnel exit. The lower limit is sensible.

The number of 80kmh signs is almost comical.

There are variable speed zone signs here and there. Technically they could have a different limit for each lane. Maybe the variable speed will go lower than 80.

The idea of the signs is they can set different limits for each lane. I've seen this in the UK and Europe and it can be very effective.

^ I have a feeling many people won't be following those if they're different in each lane, and mainly because I don't think we're used to different limits for each lane too.

Got my chance to run through the tunnel today heading to the airport and compared with the usual backroad rat-run it was excellent.

Couple of idiots changing lanes and weaving well above the 80 Kph posted speed, but I had steady progress with no issues.

Sadly the SH20A branch for the airport is still a real mess and I probably spent almost as much time on that short stretch as the rest of my journey.

If people could just smooth out their driving, learn how to merge etc things would run so much more smoothly. Hopefully self driving cars will improve things.

Yep, happens in the vic park tunnel too - signs saying do not change lanes and they still do.

Until there is a consequence for these people that think they are better drivers than everyone else and therefore don't need to follow the rules, it will continue.

The enforcement needs to be tougher, and the consequences harsher (obviously, the $80 for using a phone whilst driving is not enough of a deterrent, for example. - I see it every day)

Silly question here - but why not change lanes? The fact it is a tunnel has no impact on the actual road you are driving on, so assuming you are driving sensibly and taking due care, there should be no impediment to changing lanes....seems another redundant rule to attempt to mitigate peoples stupidity?

Agreed, most people should be able to safely change lanes in a tunnel.

The 'rule' is there for the lowest common denominator. It shouldn't be so easy to get a drivers license...

Yep, it is to accommodate the fact that a lot of drivers are useless/inconsiderate - they follow too close and speed up to stop people changing lanes. The end result is that the lane changes cause pressure waves in the flow and everything slows down. If people would allow a reasonable gap and anticipate to allow people to merge/change lanes smoothly then traffic would flow better overall. Bring on driverless cars?

Like the guy I got stuck behind yesterday in the tunnel. In an old Nissan ute, with furniture piled high, unsecured in the back, doing about 60kmh. Wish I had a dashcam. Everyone dutifully stayed in their lane until we exited the tunnel, but I can only imagine the carnage if stuff had started falling off.
Commute was still ten minutes shorter than similar journeys in the past.

A pile up in the tunnel has serious consequences for emergency service access to the scene. Motorways can be accessed from adjacent streets if needed. Tunnels are challenging. So yes, but not redundant.
