https://www.hmi.co.nz/en-nz/ the video shows them going about 10km/h and advertises for set โ€˜smallโ€™ areas and predetermined routes... essentially a self drive golf cart?

Not sure this is the beginning, middle or end of self driving cars, but a niche market in the making which is interesting nonetheless ๐Ÿ‘

That is good. If there is a worry about self drive (trusting automation) these would be a good way to release the concept. Soon be "normal" in the eyes of the worriesome people. Its a stretch to allow your 5yo child to hop into a self drive cab, as the only occupant, to cross town. One day the comment will be "really? you were worried? about what?

Didn't think of that, but me, Id be worried that the driverless car makes a mistake, another makes a mistake, and the child is alone. Same applies to anything of any value that the car transports for me.

Yup kidnapping and lost child eg if the car goes awol and powers down (eg BSOD) - if it can happen on a simple thing like a mobile phone, a more complex thing like a laptop; also hacked / attempted hack

Really? In NZ (or in your case OZ)???

When last did a kid get kidnaped in transit Oz/NZ?
What measures do you have (or take) to prevent kidnaping?

In South Africa (where that stuff DOES actually happen) people drive around armed, and run red lights at night โ€œwhen safe to do soโ€ and mainly avoid specific areas and driving at night (where possible). They also live in razor wire fenced complexes guarded by armed security personnel...

How many of these do you do to prevent kidnaping?

Seriously though, if a security driver can do these things, a vehicle can be armed and programmed to do so too (in countries this is as issue in).

Never happened does not mean I will risk my child. But that's me. Planes have also never been shot down from the sky at 38,000 ft. Until one did. Things never happen until they do.

We are more talking about day to day reliability and trust in self drive. The link earlier of low speed mini buses is good. And non self drive cars having many accident avoidance capabilities. But for me to hop in a cab, travel 20km in town and open road to a destination where I am merely an exposed passenger in the back seat aint my idea of a relaxing trip

So you no longer fly either?

Some dangers are worth worrying about, crossing the road and the (real) chance of drunk drivers... these are things I worry over for my children, both of which are far less likely with driverless cars.

Quote: " ....a quirk in New Zealand's transport law that meant there was no requirement for vehicles to have a driver." .....

...significant barriers to the growth of the industry exist in road safety laws, uncertainty about legal responsibility for crashes and even such issues as hacking into the software controlling the vehicles..." end of quote.

And what do you think about it?

I'm all for it, with certain BIG reservations.

My biggest one would be governments demanding backdoor access....and then using it to get rid of people they don't like.

Sounds far-fetched until you read the details of the many assassination plots carried out in real life by the CIA, KGB and Mossad.....so name just a few. Then let's move on to organised crime and what they get up to......

How could you ever trust your car and all the cars around you?

Granted, no one will want to kill or maim me......but maybe my car is the one they use to get someone else in an oncoming vehicle? I'm collateral damage.......and we know very well governments already do this with drones and bombs, blowing up a building to get one person in it.....and everyone else in there dies, too. Organised crime would have no qualms hacking your car from some far-away city and crashing it into whoever / whatever.  Or just stopping it somewhere so they can kidnap or kill using more conventional means.

Yes, the risk of this would be smaller than being hit by lightning.

But it's a risk you don't face in your car today. It's a new one.

It's a risk we could choose to ignore...and probably will.....but it will always be there if you're not the person in control.

Inevitable, Definitely not in my lifetime, but I do expect that my grandchildren will grow up thinking that a car that you have to drive yourself is just as 'quaint' as the horse and cart is to us.  Hell my teenager has never seen a car with wind up windows, or a manual gear change come to think of it.

I do wonder how they will program the cars to protect life (first rule?), when given 2 options where one person has to be seriously injured or die (i.e the 'trolley problem'), do the occupants come first, or someone else, how would a computer decide?    Ethical issues galore.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

Driverless cars in NZ would need to programmed that it is ok to run over possums, rabbits, etc, in fact swerve to hit them if it can be done so safely,  but not cats and dogs and kids etc. Tricky.

Im more worried about the manually driven cars taking advantage of autonomous cars collision avoidence etc, pushing in with late merging, cutting them off knowing they will stop etc.

Also I hate the term self drive. It means the opposite to different people. Stop using it.
