Ahh roundabouts!  Having lived near Swindon in the UK I used to get to play on the Magic Roundabout!

Imagine if they stuck this in Auckland ;-)

How do people even survive in that country with that thing in the middle?

Imagine being take through that on your test.

Is it called the Magic Roundabout because like the original TV series, rumour has it that the creators were on drugs?

"Lets make a roundabout with 5 other roundabouts around it that is 3 lanes across!  I'm a genius!"

It doesn't look that bad to me. Not saying that there are better ways to manage that intersection, but doesn't it just cut down the number of decisions the drivers have to make for each exit and minimises crossing over lanes (e.g. Panmure roundabout)?

There's one in Tamworth called the Egg. Traffic actually goes in two directions around the central roundabout. You go clockwise around the mini roundabouts but the traffic flows anticlockwise around the central one. In order to get to the other side, you have to negotiate three separate roundabouts. The Egg is mental and disorienting.

I don't know why they didn't just opt to put part-time traffic lights in there instead if traffic flow was a big issue.

Swindon's Magic Roundabout isn't hard if you know where you are going, but it's a nightmare if you're not sure which exit to take. At least, because it's a number of roundabouts, you can double-back on one of the mini roundabouts and then take the exit you want.

I think it's a subtle method of culling the herd ...

But not that hard to navigate, you just point your car at the desired exit, close your eyes and go fit it while chanting "Please let me live! Please let me live!"

There's one in Tauranga that's a bit similar - traffic lights in the middle of a roundabout. Bit disconcerting at first, but they're all crazies down there anyway
