The fact it is a tunnel has no impact on the actual road you are driving on, so assuming you are driving sensibly and taking due care, there should be no impediment to changing lanes....seems another redundant rule to attempt to mitigate peoples stupidity?

They are trying to minimise the chance of collisions in the tunnel.

At peak hour if there is a prang.....and the tunnel is full.....there won't be any emergency services or tow trucks in there any time soon. They'll have to close off the exit and come in from the downstream end.....all takes time.....

Just stay in the lane and go a bit slower......and no problems......

With tunnels the sense of enclosure automatically causes me to drive more cautiously.

There are variable speed zone signs here and there. Technically they could have a different limit for each lane. Maybe the variable speed will go lower than 80.

When heading into town and you get to the causeway straight, it is a sea of fiery orange and yellow balls overhead - I had flashbacks of walking through Albert Park during the Chinese Lantern Festival. I counted 24 speed signs visible simultaneously (That's six overhead gantries, with an average of 4 signs per gantry).

80 kmph my butt! The traffic coming out of the tunnel descends fairly steep ramps from overhead bridges and was joining waaay faster than the main SH16 flow.

Any other Mt Albert or surrounding suburb residents noticing a big difference in morning traffic? My bus (down Owairaka Ave) came on time this morning for the first time in over a year. And school holidays haven't even started yet!

Yes in one of the online papers today (now can't find it) they are calling it the 'Waterview effect' - quiet roads in Mt Albert, Mt Roskill and Mt Eden due to reduced rat-running.

I read that article just a few minutes ago (and also weirdly can't find it now) - it's what prompted me to put two and two together, and realise that my suddenly blazingly-quick morning commute may not be a random event.

If this keeps up I will be the Waterview Connection's biggest fan despite very rarely actually needing to use it myself.

Fires in tunnels are also to be avoided.

Himself travels from Onewhero to Whenuapai pretty frequently. He used the tunnel yesterday and is mighty pleased with it.

Though he felt the jam getting onto the Southern on the trip was home was worse than usual.

Yup east west link or what ever its called, Will be a very good link to have and will take heavies off the streets.
So they can easily go from onehunga port to wiri etc and penrose to the port. Its a missing link for sure.

East Auckland needs something.

In my work I have to travel all over Auckland from the Office on the Shore. Botany is the worst place to get to from anywhere (except probably Manukau).

They had a motorway designed, but it got canned because the wealthy voters through Orakei and GI kicked up a stink.

Maybe just decent rail/light rail from Panmure to Botany and through to Manukau (and the airport)?

Why?

If they want to build decent railway instead of motorways, I'm on board with that, but by opening up new suburbs the price of land (& housing) can be bought down.

They are presently planning the next extension of SH16 from where the motorway presently ends at Whenuapai to Kumue.

They are also presently planning the extension of SH1 from Puhoi to Wellsford.
