Winterising ... pffft. Boat runs all year - some of the best fishing is in winter if you know where to go and no need to get up early.

If it's been more than two weeks I give the tanks a top up with some new fuel and no-problem.

I also flush the fuel line back into the tank if I haven't used the boat in the last few days. I find this makes a huge difference to start up times. I'm running carburetted two strokes.

The Father is registered with the coast guard, at this time of year since he has the largest most powerful boat with towing capabilities he gets called a few times because people have sucked diesel bug into their launches and need to be towed home... Fun times..

Must be frustrating as that is avoidable by treating diesel and controllable by having filters and carrying spare elements.

McKeown Group opened a new un maned fuel station yesterday (Portsmith Drive) in Dunedin.
91 Petrol is $2.459, 3 to 4 cents cheaper than the other stations.
Diesel is $1.569 A good 28 to 30 cents cheaper than the other local stations.

There is a BP, a Z, and a Mobil station within a few blocks of the McKeon's station. Will be interesting to see how they respond.

Nothing worse than coming back from a calm day at Cape Turakarai and turn in at Pencarrow and be presented with a harbour of white caps. Makes for a very slow and uncomfortable sail to Point Howard. That NW can come up so fast and you just don't feel it in the lee.

I'd be interested to know who supplies these smaller independent chains. We have NPD in Nelson. But they are about the same price as the bigger companies.

I think this makes Jacinda's point. Gull New North Rd and Mobil Sandringham Rd were both at $2.30 this morning (as I sailed past on the bus). Meanwhile you're paying $2.64 somewhere else in Auckland. How is this the government's fault, and not a failure of competition?

It's not a failure of competition as such, it's what happens when you have incredibly intense competition. Discounting to compete with lower priced providers such as Gull means they need to subside that discounting by charging more elsewhere.

The result of intense competition is fuel being sold at (or even below in some cases) cost in some parts of the country. The downside of this is that people elsewhere in the country are having to pay more to subsidise this to average things out.

People complained 10 years ago that the price of petrol was the same everywhere in the country and perceived there was no competition as a result. Now we have true retail competition and people are unhappy with the outcome.

That's not how it works. If you can't compete without having to get other revenue from elsewhere then you're not actually competing. You either compete (by dropping your prices across the board) or you go bust.

There is generally no competition in New Zealand. Most markets are run as cartels.

It's a pain, After 6 months of sitting tho you can be there all day changing diesel filters with an endless supply of them and get nowhere. The buggers need to be sucked out and treated.

Same as the others. W/sale agreements with main suppliers or direct from Refinery. For many, they are essentially contractors it seems. That are given a good slice off to do the distribution in rural areas on behalf.

Bill McKeown was a terminal manager for one of the major fuel companies and was asked to take the business on as an agency to deliver fuel to the farming community and small commercial accounts, as well as on-selling lubricants in the area.

You can buy from them here in Hornby too. But they don't advertise, or have flashy forecourts. So pass discounting on. Same as the unmanned NPDs (Nelson Petrolium Distribution are going fairly SI wide now..) And for that, it seems they buy in bulk. (more discounting) and store it locally. Essentially passing on their commercial discount to the end users

I don't notice NPD being any cheaper. I use them because they have some stations with truck sized forecourts, so they are an easy place to fill up the boat.

In CHC, the unmanned NPD truckstop in hornby is usually a constant 9-12c cheaper (McKs is down the road from it). As is the new one in Madeville. The forecourt stations that have taken over (Now Lincoln Rd, Moorehouse, Rolleston, and soon to be harewood) are all as per competitors, but do 3 day a week promos fairly regularly. 15c off yesterdays fill, no vouchers etc. And they will match competitors vouchers up to 12c

I hope the price of petrol keeps going up, so that it becomes something like the Koru Club: Something only few can afford, but us Geekzone members can all post about it smugly "Ugh, can you believe how crowded the BP in Ponsonby has become?" "I don't know whyyyyyy I pay to be a Petrol member, it's so overcrowded" etc.

Huh? There is plenty of competition. A cartel involves setting prices or price fixing which is certainly not happening in the market, unlike 10 or so years ago when it was happening when everybody was tied to a national price for petrol.

So slightly related, how long does 91 usually last in a tank? And if it does go off what do you do to clean/use it? Got a friends bike thats used occasionally, but I don't think it's been topped up for 8+ months. It's 150cc fuel injected and still has about 40% left in the tank.
