History is repeating itself.

i think it is the other way around. the high fuel prices is usually an indicator of the problem to come.

oh well, the petrol tax supposedly for auckland region which i seem to think it is fair. honestly even if they ask me to pay $100 per person to raise the money to sort auckland transport i would pay (provided that it is being used to fix that!)

last govt increase GST which annoys me a lot more than the current govt. that was 8 years ago, i guess most of us don't remember that now.

I remember. Came with tax cuts. From my perspective it was a good trade. But that depends on individual circumstances.

Taxes that target enjoyable activities annoy me more - fuel, alcohol etc etc.

There is generally no competition in New Zealand. Most markets are run as cartels.

Huh? There is plenty of competition. A cartel involves setting prices or price fixing which is certainly not happening in the market, unlike 10 or so years ago when it was happening when everybody was tied to a national price for petrol.

You missed the part about not actually competing. If you drop your prices in area A to compete with supplier B, but put up prices in area C to get back what you lost then you are not competing. When supplier B opens a store in area C, or all of the customers move to area A then you are sad. And then you go out of business (which is how competition works).

Diesel is $1.569 A good 28 to 30 cents cheaper than the other local stations.

There is a BP, a Z, and a Mobil station within a few blocks of the McKeon's station. Will be interesting to see how they respond.

Thanks for the information; I knew the station was coming soon but I wasn't aware it was already opened.
Shame that for an unmanned station, the 91 price is not as cheap as I was hoping based on other unmanned stations I have see on my travels (like the Allied and NPD in Oamaru)
Being only 3c cheaper than full price stations, there is no saving as you can get 6c off at anytime at BP (if you are spending $40 - I guess it is a saving if you are doing $10/20 fills)

It will be interesting to see if the stations around McKeown do price match as the stations around Pak N Save are 1-2c cheaper

Price is great for diesel users though (I think .. as I am not a diesel user)

Thanks to the MBIE website link; it does seem that the cost of petrol does seem to have a pretty consistent percentage between the cost, the margin and the taxes even though we are at all time price highs - so yes I can see that we are to blame the current bad exchange rate, and it just seems that extra taxes were put on at the wrong time..

As a petrol user in Dunedin I have to pay "the national price" because all the petrol stations price everything the same, and put it up at the same time; it annoys me to see that even after the Auckland tax it would be cheaper for me to fill my car up in Auckland rather than in Dunedin (ignoring the actual logistics of that). It really does "feel" like the South Island is helping to support the price wars in the central to upper North Island.

248.9 for 91 at most BP and Z in Wellington city. Johnsonville is usually 4c cheaper (Johnsonville has a BP, Z, Mobil and independent Challenge) but then Tawa is the same as Wellington city.

I tend to fill up at either of the Gulls in Rotorua. In fact I was there last week, but think I filled up in Tauranga as I was detoured.

It's not that interesting: the fuel taxes are ring-fenced for transport. General surpluses have nothing to do with it. What is interesting is that an hour after the latest IPCC report was released, Jacinda Ardern was telling a press conference that fuel prices were too high, despite climate change being the nuclear free of our generation. Take a look at those photos of the Franz Josef glacier:

I've never been there. Seems like there's not a lot left to see.

However, the tiny number of NZ motorists probably did not cause that....
