OMG, the latest news is that the co-pilot apparently deliberately downed the plane.

Herald article

This is just shocking. Plenty more articles on news sites.

If this proves to be true, what a selfish b@st@rd. If he really wanted to commit suicide why didn't he just drove his car into a tree?

Incredibly sad.  Can't believe people are capable of such things.  I wonder how long it will take authorities to tell which one converted to Islam and became an ISIS terrorist?

Chime in the conspiracy theory that ISIS have found a way to down passenger aircrafts and are in final stages of testing

Really, planes have become so safe from equipment and build failures that the only room for major improvement are the operators

I tend to think this incident type could not occurr without the new cockpit security mechanisms. You get some safety from.one thing but extreme.vulnerability to another.

I wonder if he has a flight simulator too.  I'm not saying there are any conspiracy theories, but at least you won't be surprised if it pops up in the Herald.

We're talking about the mass murder of 149 people (including many children) plus one suicide. Not an accident. yell

Has been discussed ad nauseum elsewhere.

The cockpit doors have security locks - they can be set as follows:

1. Lock (able to be opened with PIN from outside)
2. Override Lock (not able to be opened with PIN from outside)
3. Open

Changing this setting requires force and lifting of a switch - almost impossible to do by accident (as some theories have "falling on the switch" as a possibility).

All US Airlines operate a 2 person rule in cockpit, there must always be a pilot + copilot or co/pilot + steward/hostess.

Apparently not all other airlines have this policy.

So the security system has been designed to prevent outside intruders, not a malicious pilot. The 2 person rule may have avoided this situation.

But we don't have all the facts yet. Let's not jump to conclusions.

^^^

I hear that European airlines are rapidly introducing a similar policy of two in the cockpit at all times. It makes sense.

i heard that the co pilot was calming breathing away, and that he overrode the auto correction / anti crash electronics of the plane
