The problem with the Microsoft Media keyboard (if it's the one that comes with the Media Center remote control) is that it's infrared - it means if your HTPC goes to sleep you can't get it back with a touch of any key, you have to push the power button. With the Logitech one you can just tap any key or slide your finger on the touchpad and get the HTPC back in action from sleep or hibernation.

Oh, that one is a lot better than the Media Center one.

Although it says K400 (non r), it actually is K400r - I have had many of these from Amazon.

We just got some logitech keyboards at work that had a letter added to the name and they swapped the nice nano unifying reciever for a different non unifying one. On some it is a nano but on others it is a large one like the old $30 sets had. Check what you are getting.

You sure you aren't talking about the range extender?

The basic nano is pretty tiny. But, it has limited range.

So Logitech provide a range extender you can plug the nano into.

It makes the whole reciever about 3-4 times longer.

But, it does give the keyboard a lot better range.

No its a large Dongle like a small flash drive. I'll get a pic later tonight and tweet it since that is easier.

I grabbed one of these last time they were cheap on 1-day and even though it is refurbished it looked brand new to me. It's a great little keyboard for the media PC.

Blanch: I have both the older K400 and a Microsoft All-in-one Media Keyboard

I was going to buy K400R for a new build, but the Microsoft keyboard was cheaper at the time.
You can buy the Microsoft All-in-one Media Keyboard for $43 and they are very similar.

any chance you could do a quick compare of distance both of these keyboard reach and report back?

I'll have a look tonight when I get home.

Both work fine 6m from the dongle, only problem I can't see what I'm typing on a 42" TV at 6m

The Microsoft keyboard keyboard has the media keys like the new K400R, when I press Alt + F4 the pc goes to sleep.

Coincidentally enough, Amazon have the k400 on sale today - USD$24.99, which comes to around NZD$44 including shipping.
