Alright so i managed to have a play with it today. Took a bit to get it to work for installing apps like netflix.
First, I had to change my country to US under Amazon's Manage your content and devices - Settings - Country Settings. I used my Youshop address here. Second, i setup the UnoTelly DNS servers in my router so that the FireTV stick grabbed & use those for DNS resolution. Optionally you can enter the UnoTelly DNS manually on the FireTV stick wi-fi network setup.
So far so good, Netflix and Kodi running ok, and Kodi is pretty snappy on my first impression.
Next I want to take the FireTV home and setup my SAMBA shares as my media sources in KODI and see how it compares to the Raspberry PI 2 OpenElec install.
I'm also looking at what other apk's I can sideload, I have ES File explorer and the Youtube apk in mind so far.
arvis: I read somewhere, that roku 2 is better than fire stick. Any opinions on this? I'm looking for something that would be able to play from my NAS also. It looks like mirroring or plex server on a computer is the only option?
Have a look at Emby, it's a streaming/content management tool that will run on a bunch of operating systems and has multiple frontends - you can use Kodi/XBMC, there's apps for Android/FireTV, Roku and even HTML5. It's open source and I've found it to be much more stable than Plex.
sumitonly: Never had any other stick.. but i do feel its definitely a good investment. added settings.apk, kodi and youtube.. you dont need a smart tv, if you own this. ftp to my router, i can watch anything thats on my external drive.
Did you sideload the android Youtube.apk app? I am not a fan of the Fire TV youtube apps and can't understand why there isn't a native app.
NO, it's part of kodi as an addon.. this way I didn't waste any memory.
I managed to get the Youtube APK going yesterday, sort of. It was a pain to get it going where you have to install google play services, google play store, and few other google apps , then the youtube apk. It loaded and I managed to sign in, but there was an annoying message popping up on the first run where you have to click OK for it to go away. Problem is that I couldn't click ok with the Stick remote and couldn't really browse through my subscriptions and other videos because of this. I suspect that if you have a bluetooth keyboard & mouse and you manage to get rid of this annoying OK button, the youtube apk should work alright.
In the end because of this I went with the Kodi Youtube addon which is good.
I would recommend shipito if you are getting multiples. Amazon shipped my last lot in seperate boxes, and with youshops pretty lame consolodation it would probably be way more expensive.
The Fire TV box is on my lounge TV, and the fire tv stick feeds content to a Qumi Q2 projector pointed at my bedroom ceiling.
I have them both set up with netflix and kodi.
Fire TV box has a 100mbps Ethernet port (I have ethernet to both my Main TV and bedroom), optical audio out (don't use), and a voice recognition on the remote (don't use).
Fire TV stick is Wifi only and lacks the above features.
Both run netflix fine. Both run Kodi fine for low to mid bitrate stuff (although the fast forward is quite bad on the stick at around the 7gb move bit-rate size), but the fire tv can't handle full quality Blu ray rips from my NAS (keeps buffering - I don't know if the issue is its computing power or it's wifi - about 5m from the router, through 1 wall + a wardrobe.)
Fire tv stick does tend to run a bit hot.
Remote buttons are a bit nicer tactile press on the fire TV box.
If you only watch netflix, and low bitrate files on kodi, then the fire tv stick would work fine, save your money. but if you are about blue ray quality fork out for the Fire TV box.
Personalty I regret buying the stick over the fire tv (especially as I have Ethernet to my bedroom), however it is rare that I need to swap them, so I haven't sold it off on trade me, which was my plan if it didn't live up to my expectations.
Hi, I'm new to the world of chromecast vs firestick. I have had an apple tv for a few years and installed plex on it which I loved for viewing my films. Now that plex doesn't work I'm looking for an alternative. I also like the idea of being able to watch stuff on the BBC iplayer. My question is to those in the know is can I install plex on the firestick easily and can I get the BBC iplayer onto it. I like the idea that the firestick has a remote where as chromecast doesn't. Any help would be appreciated. Cheers
Does the firestick tv not come with a native youtube app ? My old samsung tv doesn't support youtube anymore so I am need a solution for it.I assume fire stick tv is better than google chromecast?
