Wade: Was in Spark @ Manukau Westfields on the weekend and they have cool 30cm-ish micro USB cords available in a range of bright colours for i think it was $6 or $7ea. had some sort of magnet in each end so they snap together, could be perfect for what you are trying to achieve

Thanks Wade - I'll check out my local Westfield Queensgate Spark store this week!

I wanted a TV that DSE had on special online a couple of years back, so figured I'd pop into the store instead. The franchisee\manager was unimpressed as the online sale price was apparently less than his buy price.

Some reasons I haven't purchased anything from them in many years, is (a) they used to price match other retailers, and advertised this advantage, then when I did want to get them to price match, they said they no longer did this. (b) They used to allow you to return products if it didn't suit your requirements, which was great for electrical parts. (c) They no longer sell components.
When I was a kid, I was given one of those dick smiths home electronic kits where you build your own circuits, run off a 9 volt battery. They were one of the things people got in the 80's and 90's as kids, which got people interested in technology. Don't know if they do these sorts of things now.

I was sure the DSE still did them up, to a few years ago, but maybe they have been gone longer than that. I may check out Jaycar to see what they are like, although don't have one close by.

Yeah, I realize this, although not quite the same thing. We did also have computers back in the 80's and 90's that you could hook up to control things, like the old BBC and acorns. These electroinc kits are a more raw experience, and are what got me interested in repairing electronic stuff. I think kids are a bit spoilt with some of this new technology, and it is a bit more removed from the raw components, such as what resisters, diodes, LEDs, capacitors etc do.

Hiamie: I am getting bombarded with junk "special" emails from Dick Smith... The instant I see the email with "online only" I hit delete - which is pretty much every email!
There's a store just round the corner - I'll buy from there and see and feel the product first, if interested.

Having said that, I did need a product the other day.... only to find the website only gave the online price - with no store price... It was for some batteries. I am sure the batteries can be purchased in store - nothing special about them, but the website insisted that they were an "online item"as there was no store price given.

I wondered what the delivery price might be so I started entering my details.... just to see what the final price would be, if delivered. When it came to asking me my postcode it wouldn't accept my postcode (1052), but if I entered the same postcode in the store finder area, it reported my nearest store as Newmarket, which is correct.

I gave up, and purchased my items from Jaycar! Much easier!!

Dick Smith.... you used be a good store, but now just massive disappointment.

You can click and collect from stores for free with most online only deals provided they have it in stock in the store but of course you have limited ability to see and feel the product before picking it up. Although technically I'm pretty sure you can just cancel the order before collecting. This isn't directly stated but implied by the fact they say if you don't pick up within 14 days it will be cancelled and refunded.

I can't speak for the OP but earlier in the year I did get some good deals by buying stuff on discount along with the cash off discount. From Pricespy it was cheaper than other stores had ever been for one (a Samsung monitor) and nearly as good as the Boxing day deals had been for another (a printer). I didn't purchase but it seemed the same for a few other items I looked at. And being coupon deals store price match offers exclude them.

They seem to have the cash off deals every few days so if they really remove the discount that would seem suggest they have to do the same. Should show up in PriceSy etc. May be it's only a few items.

Also bear in mind along with the cash only deals they do have a few limited time deals every few days. Some seem to reoccur a lot e.g. Chinese made Enerloop. These of course deliberately don't coincide or are excluded. (The ones I've tried have been the normal sales that last a week or more and are often in their catalog and of course in store.)
