My favourite haunt after school for components (mostly making antenna and crystal sets), was The Lamphouse (Manners Street, Wellington) ... a perfect Alladin's cave of resisters, capacitors, copper wire ....

Back in the day in ChCh it was Tricity House, Dick Smith came along with the Dick Smith Wizard but i got a C64. Now we have Harvey Normal, Noel Leemings, JayCar.

I have purchased a few things from them, I believe they charge GST on the purchases but they are fulfilled from Australia.

The prices are generally very good. Haven't had anything go wrong with what I have purchased as I can't comment about their after sales service.

Shipping is quite slow, so if you want it yesterday then probably go elsewhere.

I remember them. Never went there but pretty sure I may have used them for mail order, like I did with Dick Smith. In the days before credit cards. Money orders, remember those, or send cash in the mail.

I've probably got some of the old original offset printed Dick Smith catalogues lying around.

And David Reid , similar sort of shop.
I bought my 1st amp kitset from David Reid , way way back (Sanken chip/hybrid) . Saw it on trademe recently, so its its still in use after all these years

At least Jaycar still sell the hobbyist stuff

I get all my stuff in from China these days, I get it landed on my desk for about 10%-50% of the price of buying it in NZ.

Sure you have to watch out for fakes, but over all I have had a very good experience.

BEWARE OF Dick Smith!

I purchased a monitor, which arrived smashed, a week later still no correspondence from them even after multiple queries.

Buy local and atleast you can go in store to get issues sorted.

Lesson Learnt.

After WWII at least until about 1952, they channelled large quantities of war surplus electronics. They produced a mail-order catalogue[s] so the contemporary equivalent of buying on the internet!
