Mine start up with HQ mode each time out of the box though.

This is what I see and hear after Step 1)

2 quick blue lights
a sound

then
3 quick red lights

then
3 slower blue lights
a sound

2 Blue + 3 red is what you're after. Some devices will indicate if it is in aptX mode:

So am I correct in assuming from your post that I am in aptX mode?

I see (probably/perhaps since I am no expert) that you are running OSX.
My laptop runs Windows 10 and for the record I haven't been able to tell whether the headphones are in aptX mode or not, even though it appears as a Device and I have looked through the Properties.

Ordered through Heathcotes yesterday for $270. Didn't really need them, but two sets of wireless at that price too good to turn down.

Waiting on mine to turn up. If I use them on my Mac with aptX and then want to use them with my iPhone which doesn't support that, does that mean I have to change the mode every time I switch between them?

Not quite sure with Windows - I am a Linux / OSX / Chromebook person personally. Assuming you've got 3 blue lights and some kind of high quality music is generated when you play it then assume it is in aptX mode.

No. It'll work fine without switching.

aptX comes out of the box as the standard configuration (it did with me) and these headphones will use the correct codec for your device. As long as your headphones boot up with the 3 quick blue flashes then you're set. If your device supports aptX then it'll use it otherwise it'll use the next best codec.

Strange that yours came with it on by default which is contrary to all reviews I have seen about these. Which is strange because why would it ship without it on if it defaults back anyway if not available??
