Looks like your pricing was the same as mine. I went for $23 for the shower shipping. Reasonably happy with that

I'm a bit torn. I like google home ( especially its chromecast integration) but find that alexa ( dot) has better voice recognition and mics. I currently have 2 googles, and 2 alexa - the Alexa's are used in my bedroom for lighting control etc and in the lounge for av automation ( using a harmony hub), and also wired directly to my amp for Spotify playback.

The googles are in the kitchen ( radio and home automation) and the 'shed / cave' for controlling av etc ( also with harmony hub)

Both of them I find to have really weird mics. Sometimes I can get google to answer from 7m away no problems, other times right infront of it have to say ok google about 4 times to get it to answer.

And the echo will sometimes ignore me even when I am right beside it and its not playing, have to press its button to talk to it then it is fine. Quite a long way to go from the star trek type recognition.

And I dont have a disk lamp, stupid things keep thinking that is what I say so I will have to rename the desk lamp sometime.

Dick Smith seems to have it for the same price (not sure what the delivery cost is though).

edit: Didn't notice that the expansys is ex. gst, so DS is cheaper as it's inc. gst

DS are a direct import so there is no GST unless customs decide to charge you GST in which case their terms say you need to pay it and its not DS's problem.

So for those people who bought this and using it, is it a handy tool or just a gimmick. Whats the sound like, can it easily stream music from your phone and play no problems. Any drawbacks?

Missed out on this deal but looking at getting one of these to impress wifey with voice controlled fun.

I'm liking it, and I now have google assistant on my android auto in the car so it carries the experience.  I just want to know how to add custom news sources, as the current ones have either an Australian or US flavour.

iheart radio works well, settings alarms, and saving items to my shopping list (the home is in the kitchen / lounge)  - I would like google to integrate a bit more and realise I'm at the supermarket and suggest I take a look at my list.

Speaker works ok for music, but I've got better options, I use it as a radio more.

I like it, but without any "smart" devices in my home to control with it, it does feel like a bit of a toy rather than a necessity.

I use it for setting timers when cooking, alarms, and checking the forecast. Also play music through it which is pretty reasonable (small house with small rooms, so my not be so great in larger areas).

I cast Netflix shows to the TV which works well, and occasionally YouTube videos, although I find that not so effective. For example, if you say "play Casey Neistat videos" (don't judge me) it will play the most recent one and then onwards in chronological order from newest to oldest, but doesn't understand "play Casey Neistat videos I haven't seen" or even something I thought would be relatively simple like "play Casey Neistat videos from last year". Instead it always starts with the most recent.

When I look through the list of things I use it for above, none of them are particularly necessary or difficult to do without the device itself, so that's why I'd classify it as fun rather than necessary.

And as mentioned above, I'd use it for things like the latest news etc, but there aren't any locally relevant broadcasts to choose from. Well not that I've managed to find anyway
