Thanks! Ordered one to replace the ageing Roku3. Let's see how it goes, I thought the difference with an NVidia shield was a bit steep

SCUBADOO:
allan: I have a MiBox 8 with Android 8 and have found a complete inability to write or copy anything to an external hard drive or USB stick. No problem with reading the content. Have tried devices formatted with NTFS, FAT32 and exFAT, but no joy. ...

MiBox 3 or S?
Our MiBox S since updating to Android TV v9 last January handles all of the above both reading and writing. My USB external hard drives etc. are connected via a powered USB hub.
The MiBox 3 is still stuck on v8 and will only read USB drives. I have yet to find any fix.

Ha - that would be a typo on my part... I have a MiBox 3, so updates have basically ceased.

Looks like we are stuck with that as an issue then.

Finally had time and unboxed mine last night, working nicely for what its being used for.. however there is nothing I can do to get it to update.. from 8.0 to 9.0.. download keeps failing..

I believe these may have also been parallel imported and the power adapter replaced by PB with a cheap generic usb to barrel plug and cheap generic usb power adapter.. they look out of place and I notice that the MI box seal had been broken and replaced with a "sealing label - if you see void or if this label is broken it means the box has been opened during shipping"

You should be able to download the update manually, put it on a USB stick and do a manual update.  All the info is on this page: https://www.androidsage.com/2020/04/13/xiaomi-released-stable-android-9-pie-ota-update-for-mi-box-s/

I wouldn't worry too much . . .
I believe PBTech is the official dealer for Xiaomi in NZ - and also own/run the Mi Store in Auckland
