Very nice @olivernz I discovered these in the weekend and just about purchased on the spot.

What OS are you running on it?

Hi all

So the Aoostar is AWESOME. Bar some minor panel-gap issues its perfect. Good quality and blazingly fast. Haven't had the CPU above 5% yet lol. I have 64gb normal ram installed.

Running Proxmox 9 on it with virtualised TrueNAS. Yes, the SATA controller can be passed through. Device 00:67:00

I have the two SFPs bonded and running 10gbit each to my aggregation switch. Tested with iperf and I get 9.41gbps constantly. I have nothing else bonded that I can go beyond that.

The drive caddies have been criticised but they are better than my QNAP I think.

And it is still tiny compared to my 8 bay.

But man, is it a mess moving a NAS.

It's probably a good thing I need to pay for a new bathroom otherwise.....

Oh well I'll have to wait for my bonus.

Not even for US$899 which is the cost of the WTR Max with 32GB of RAM

I just pulled trigger on an Aoostar WTR Max to replace my very power hungry franken-server, which has grown over the years. It'll be nice to have something compact and a bit less power hungry.

Congrats! Have had mine running now for a few months with Proxmox and TrueNAS with a passed through SATA controller. Works like a dream. Just don't know how to load up the processors!!!! No matter what I do it doesn't tend to go post 10% CPU LOL. I am VERY happy with the unit.

My WTR Max turned up yesterday. @olivernz you weren't kidding about it being teeny tiny. My frankenserver was in a huge Phanteks Enthoo 719 case. This is something like 10% of the volume.

The one thing that was very disappointing is it did have the backplane screw issue which meant one of the caddies couldn't load. It wasn't a huge deal to fix but it was a bit disappointing. Other than that I'm rapt, my rack power consumption has dropped by 100w so that achieves the two primary aims of this exercise of saving space and power.

On a number of units the screws attaching the backplane to the chassis are too long and stop hard drives from being able to be inserted in one slot. It’s an easy fix (remove the fan mounting plate, back the screws off a couple of turns) but annoying.

I’ll get some nylon washers so I can fully tighten the screw again.
