Current ISP contract (900/500) ending soon. Current Glimp MyRepublic tempting. Thoughts folks?

We went with My Republic over a year ago. At the time they provided excellent customer service over the telephone to get both our internet and VOIP going. Since then they have stopped providing voice support and only provide online chat. This, of course, is useless if you can't use your internet and want to tell them and get support.

The price is reasonable and we, so far, have only experienced one outage.

They use CGNAT (I think is is called) which means that your IP address is set to Auckland which upsets some websites trying to obtain your location. That is unless you pay extra each month for a dedicated IP address.

At the moment I would not recommend them because of the lack of telephone support.

Search for MyRepublic on here. Make your decision.

https://www.trustpower.co.nz/promotion/ww-details#fmaxww

Trustpower has $134 per month for unlimited gigabit, if you sign up for power (average prices). Some of the items on their bonus list are close to the $3216 you'll pay for the broadband for the length of the contract. Like buying an appliance with 0% interest over 2 years, and getting free broadband.

I've heard bad things, but I've been having a good experience with them, since I finally got fibre in November (one of the last UFB1 areas). I had an item on their rewards list on my wish list for a while, but couldn't justify the cost for a new dryer.

Plus, though others here disagree, DHCP is a much much better setup for an ISP. No encapsulation, and no issues with authentication. No VLAN and no PPPoE is my preference. But the choice of good signing bonuses was enough to get me to sign up. One year in, no problems I couldn't track down to my fault (I got their router, it's free, and I'm using it as a WiFi extender, and my router for the main router).

Don't get MyRepublic.

Regards,

Former MyRepublic NZ Employee

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

MR must hate these forums!

Also Glimp is heavily bias to those RSPs who give kickbacks to them

I wouldn't go near Trustpower either, to be honest. Or Nova, or Contact or any of the power companies.

It's not just about price.

For me staff presence on Geekzone is a consideration when picking an RSP , I don't want to be told to reboot a router, check my wifi settings when my ONT has a red optical light, I just want a fault logged to get it fixed.

If a "free" lowspec appliance is something you would be getting anyway, the trustpower isnt a bad deal. I dont have any need for the stuff on offer but if I was in a position where one would be useful then it would be a very tempting offer.

No dire stories of support horror among people I know with them, performance is ok for what it is, so not all overpromise and under deliver like my republic have done many times.

As others have said, the general consensus around here is avoid MR like the plague. The two most recommended ISPs are 2degrees and Voyager.

I'm a geek, a gamer, a dad, a Quic user, and an IT Professional. I have a full rack home lab, size 15 feet, an epic beard and Asperger's. I'm a bit of a Cypherpunk, who believes information wants to be free and the Net interprets censorship as damage and routes around it. If you use my Quic signup you can also use the code R570394EKGIZ8 for free setup.

I would add Vodafone to the list of ISPs to Avoid - Their behavior reported by users on these forums forcing people onto FWA is pretty awful

I am with them for Mobile but only because of Red Share and $7 daily roaming when wife and I go to the US (not that we are doing that at the moment)

My preference - Voyager, BigPipe, 2D.

The "big boys" have had their chance and failed to meet expectations (yes, I know BigPipe is Spark blah blah) in my eyes :)

The only difference between BigPipe and Spark is no VLAN10 on the PPPoE (unless you ask for it) and the availability of the 100/100 plan
