And Optus, despite 48 hours of trying to fix its problems, has thrown in the towel for the Pool matches. Fees to be refunded to those that subscribed to Optus's stunning streaming service.

Coverage, via broadcasting (yes, that antiquated technology to reach the masses) has gone back to SBS.

Final 16 and all the finals to be shown on SBS. Thats $8m in rights gone up in smoke for Optus plus any marketing, technical and admin costs. Expensive exercise to get wrong even before accounting for the lose of goodwill and confidence with customers and the public.

TVNZ will have no problem handling the RWC. Each game is discrete there are no issues with multiple events on multiple channels. Ad funded broadcasters have had every RWC except the last one so it should be no problem for them. But for Spark, - who have the rights and want you to pay for it to be streamed,.... well, Optus has shown how well it can be done.

And yet that excludes such a significant proportion of viewers that Optus has given full refunds and now all 64 matches will be on SBS. For an event that is late evening and early morning in Australia - when people are more likely to be able to stream to a TV or watch on a desktop. Maybe there is an issue getting it from the mobile/tablet to the TV? How many people would that affect?

I took the comment that it affected mobile users only as phone and tablets. Leaving the typical TV app or desktop app as fine. Do you feel there are many many who stream from a phone to a TV? That's pretty Scrooge like. We have threads here on UHD TV and we apparently watch a lot from our teeny phone streaming over wifi to a TV? Maybe many do, to save 45 cents??

Its estimated that around 30% of viewing is done on phones/tablets in the US. More in high public transport commuting cities in Asia.

There were more TVNZ OnDemand views on mobile app than either connected TV or desktop/laptop last month. You be the judge of how many people might be affected. And remember thats adfunded content.

Oh dear - despite considerable resources and capability it seems that Amazon has suffered from poor US Open coverage.

Good thing Amazon is interested in the next SANZAR tender - would be great to have it deliver such stellar coverage of the Super 18/16/1x.

complaints include: "the lack of a replay option, poor picture quality, the inability to record matches and limited choice of courts to watch"

It always interests me with sports fans, they arent just about the does it play in good quality, is it difficult to use etc but increases in technology has bought Quite a liking to being able to record, playback, rewind and slow down.

Seems to give them a level of engagement that wasn't there back in the day...

I've certainly seen a change in people around me who are into their sports.

Adds completely new challenges to online streaming, not only is it a platform that can handle expectations but also support some pretty advanced features.

Considering it wouldn't be done on a SBC, it's not as simple as just store to disk and scroll the timeline!

To be successful, i suspect such features would be expected here too these days.

i personally have no idea what sort of platform spark are building, but i'll be excited to see what technology is backing it.

Is a level of engagement (like ability to watch something retrospectively) that is better than going back 25 years (as one reviewer describes the US Open coverage) to hard to gauge? People are asking for it to go back onto SkyUk and Eurosports so they can at least record the coverage to watch during daylight hours. Hard to imagine that this is not a level of engagement even expected 5 years ago (hardly back in the day) - PVR's have been in NZ since the mid 2000's. Thats more than 10 years - and hardly back in the day. Record, play, rewind, fast forward are features that are more than 30 years old (analog).

I recall rugby 25 years ago.... 1 match at 4pm on one channel. Is that what the viewing public can expect in the new future?

I don't like the way SVOD handles rewind. It would be pretty horrible in sport. I tried to watch a Gridiron game on amazon prime, I would be disappointed if this is the implementation Spark use to provide Rugby.

So, is any more known at this point about the delivery method Spark will use or anything about the platform etc?

The RWC is a big deal to me. I have watched every single minute of every single game of the last 2. Being able to FFWD and Rewind easily on my Sky box was key to my being able to get through the number of games I watched, and the amount of minutes..

Even with a 70Mbit Internet connection which is *generally* stable, I am quite concerned about watching stability.

Yes, I am aware it's a year out. I wonder if they will run a beta program and how I get included?
