Agreed. Just thought I would comment on the post that not all foreigners enjoy it. In fact its quiet the opposite for most.

Have you ever been to an Aussie/NZ or South Africa/NZ game (outside NZ) when the haka is done?

I was in Melbourne at a Bar for the first test against the French and there would have been 200 people there. Mostly Australians but a mix of French and Kiwi's too. When the Haka was done you could have heard a pin drop and after ward there was rousing applause (Including from most of the Australians), You might be the first I've publicly heard saying you feel that way.

Back in 2008 when I was working in the Solomons with a mix of Kiwi's and Aussies, we watched an NZ/Aus test match* and it was the same thing. Big crowd in the bar and it went dead silent for the haka, with a round of applause afterwards. Everyone talked over the anthems though.

That video clip's a classic though. The guy's don't know the words or the actions and look really uncomfortable doing it. There's a big difference these days in that the haka is given a lot more attention by both the participants and the broadcasters as well as a heap of amplification!

* I made a poster for the occasion which caused a bit of a stir. I'll have a look to see if I've still got an electronic copy and will post it if I do :-)

Why don't the blackcaps do it? Is it because cricket is supposedly 'Gentleman's' game?
I would love to see likes of Dan Vettori, Kane Williamson.. doing it.

Well they would look pretty stupid doing the Hakka only to go on and get absolutely dominated by almost every team.

It only works if the players doing it are actually intimidating.

My Nan back in the UK loved watching the Haka before every All Blacks game in the UK, she told me it made it far more exciting to watch and that AB vs "insert random countries team here" games were the best!

She especially loved watch Jonah Lomu .. very disturbing to see your own grandmother drooling over someone ;-)

Traditonally it was only performed at away matches....

Until the '87 World Cup, which I think was the first time it was performed before a NZ audience at home.

As good as the AB's one may be, I still think the best example is the Kiwis before they won the last League World Cup. It was after watching that that I knew we were in with a pretty good shot.
