The Supercars Twitter is saying that the gates to the circuit are closed to spectators

Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen have flown home already apparently.

That feels very much like game over before it even began.

The post on formula1.com is dated 7 hours ago. Around the time when the BBC and Sky Sport were saying it was canceled.

Maybe, but the F1 Twitter was quiet on anything until just recently.

The lowest low on a shambolic day for Formula 1

"the gates ... were due to be opened at 08:45 ...
Finally, at 10am local time, a statement was issued by Formula 1 and the FIA, in which the race’s cancellation was finally confirmed"

F1 Facebook comments are going nuts, sounds like people already cuing up to enter the grounds are being told its cancelled, im sure the could have made this decision before the crowds started to gather which is the exact thing they are trying to avoid.  I've been looking forward to the start of the new season for weeks now, so pretty gutted also. All those teams can probably kiss goodbye to 5-10 million bucks the cost to get there and onward to the next race if there is going to be one.

I wonder how many races we will get cancelled, likely most of the ones in Europe and North America.

I guess you exclude North America, South America, Asia, Europe, UK.

Vietnam has done well with Covid-19, so thats an option. Middle East you can probably get away with it there as well if you test the teams, then self isolate at the track and hotels. South Africa only has 15 or so cases, Russia also low. The rest seem to be toast. Unless no crowds policy and strict quarantine measures as they transport in, go to track and transport out.

Countries that are doing well may not actually want it.  You could argue everyone in Australia from all Teams now needs to go into 14 day isolation.

Countries like Vietnam have done well at containing it, but they do so by avoiding mass gatherings exactly like this.

They may change the format of the race weekend to get more races in a limited season, we might see racing on Saturday/Sunday.

F1 is such a heavily contractual sport with millions spent on sponsorship and exclusive rights, there must be penalties imposed regardless of the reason for cancellation. Not only that but you'll end up with people who had purchased tickets trying sue FIA/F1.

Sorry but what planet are you on? There are a few other considerations for the human race at the moment!

On a different note how do folks feel about the notion of Formula 1 being replaced with an expanded Formula E? I for one would be OK with this. It just seems wrong having ICE races when we are trying to save the planet. I know this wont save the planet but it helps drive the message home.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.
