IMO if they persist with the current site finding a contractor actually wanting to do the job might be a huge problem.

NZ is not the Soviet Union in 1953 - we can't actually make a contractor build the facility if they don't want to.

Searching around on Youtube there are 10 hundred different types of pile methods that could be used but at what cost?

Driving piles of any sort into an area that has active springs underneath must complicate things enormously.

Oh well, look forward to years more of swimming events in over crowded unsuitable venues, and not much better for basketball and netball.

I keep coming back to my point that it is location, location, location as the main problem.

I haven't been following this at all up until now, but man what a shambles! Surely they need to give up on that location and build it somewhere else. Would they even be able to find someone willing to take on the project now with the difficulty and risk involved?

While all this review process is going on why not turn it back into a free or paid temporary car park? Much of the site would be o.k. & the unsuitable bits could be fenced off with standards & tape. Parks could be marked onto the weeds or gravel with fluro spray cans. Have some security guards based in one of the unused portacoms on the site & give them a golf cart to patrol around in. All this could be achieved in a few days - of course it won't though. Even to get something simple like this done there would be endless meetings & reports to be done...

How to organise a Parkup in a (former) brewery.

This post of fiction involves very very senior people at the Canterbury DHB, the CCC, and Citycare.
I will call them 'DHB' 'CCC' and 'CC'
Timeline: Day 1.
9.01 am DHB calls CCC and asks if they can use the Metro Sports site as a temporary car park
CCC agrees immediately & says she will get Citycare to do it as an urgent job.
9.05 am CCC phones CC and asks for a temporary car park to be set up at the Metro
Sports site. She asks that part of it be set up the next day.
9.00 am (the next day) A small team from Citycare turn up and start setting up an
area for around 50 cars. They use a Solo sprayer that has water and dye to mark
out 50 parks. The other CC guys drive in some standards and use tape to make entry
and exit points.
10.30 am Citycare guys take a break.
10.45 am Citycare guys put up a sign that says 'Temporary free car park'
11.00 am Citycare guys check that everything looks O.K. and open gates.
11.15 am First motorist finds the free park and drives in.

From then on another 50 parks could be added each day. As the park becomes
more popular have security guards monitor the parking areas.
The guards could use one of the portacoms already on site. I imagine the
portacoms have toilets. Give the guards a golf buggy to patrol the area.

In a month or two the free car park could transition to a pay car park similar to the
one at the S.W corner.

Do I think this will happen, hell no! Could it be made to happen? Hell yes!

You forgot the need for CCC to send the request to a committee who only meet every third Tuesday on even months. The committee would than have to call for Public Submissions before sending the proposal off to the Risk Analysis team to analyse the risk involved in providing carparking on stony ground. It would than need to go to a Business unit to decide on the cost's involved and from which budget it would be allocated. Next it would have to go out to Tender as the council can't be seen to be undercutting private carpark operators. During this time someone will have to find the key to the gate that's been conveniently filed away somewhere for safe keeping. Eventually Wilsons will win the contract and they will promptly install pay machines every 20 metres and 3 road cones (3 is surely enough to help drivers traverse the maze?). By this time 12 months has passed and the contract has finally been signed with a builder to start work on the Metro facility the very next week.

I am happy to report that the key has now been found - unfortunately the lock itself is inoperative having not been used since it was put on the gate in 2012. Council staff have emailed three (3) city locksmiths to get advice whether to try CRC or WD40 to get the lock working. No replies have been received up to close of business on 22 November.

'Final decision to be made by April.' says the Minister. I expect the decision in April will be to seek extra reports and viability studies. A new taskforce will be set up with a title such as 'Canterbury Sports Towards 2050'. The taskforce will be set up after further consultations with CCC, Iwi, Canterbury sporting legends, & Sports groups. Any submission from CCC will go out to community consultation prior to the submission going to the taskforce. The CST 2050 taskforce will be given the job of making recommendations to the Govt. on sports facilities needed in not just Christchurch but the whole of Canterbury. An establishment budget of $10 million will be provided for CST 2050. Finding office space for the new entity in the CBD is not likely to be difficult.

Whatever the decision is it will divide the City & set off a new lot of squabbling. As Joe Bennett said in his story about Dubai, over there they just get things done. Another time line for Metro Sports could have been.

February 22 2011 QEII severely damaged. One week on a team from CCC could have done an initial assessment of damage. Three weeks on CCC has specialist team of engineers to make a rebuild or demolish recommendation. March 2011 final decision to demolish.

April 2011. Set aside land at airport for new Metro Sports facility. October 2011 Plans are finalised for facility. Basically QEII rebuilt on a new site with some tweaks.

February 2012 Construction started on the new QEII which has pools, multi use stadium, and athletics track.

February 2015 The new QEII facility near the airport opens & holds its first major athletics event. Also that month QEII holds a major swimming event.

Well, that's how they would do it in Dubai!

Ah yes Dubai, where the little guys opinion matters.

More likely one of the princes decides the old multistory venue isn't cool enough so builds a race track for his Porsche and his friends Ferrari to race on.

What you want to protest.... Well secret police would like a chat to you for treasonist thoughts.

Japanese reconstruction post earthquake would be a better analogy.

Problem for NZ is that these ridiculous farces such as the Christchurch Cathedral decision, and Metro Sports delays, happen all the time. Rail link to Auckland Airport - oh no that is too difficult. Talked about for 50 years - nothing done. Transmission Gully road in Wellington delayed for over 30 years. It just goes on and on.
