Most impressed with Wimbledon on [TVNZ 1] and Duke. The quality of the video is really excellent.

I'm seriously unimpressed. TVNZ1 and TVNZDuke only show the same games (at least the few times I've watched. The whole point of multi-channels is to show different content, something that also eluded them during the Comm Games at times.

If you wanted that, you could have signed up with Fan Pass ($99 per month, $59/m 6 months, or $30/m for 12 months on an eligible Spark plan). Given the fact that soccer is not a major TV sport here, and most games start while we are sleeping, I don't think people would stomach $100 for a season pass. Optus Sport priced it as AU$15 (NZ$16.40) per month, and later gave everyone refunds until the end of August due to their streaming issues.

Rugby Union on the other hand has a massive TV audience and Toyko is in a friendly time zone.

I think you missed the point. Yes one could have paid $100 via FanPass for the tournament. 64 games across 1 month. If it had only been available for $100 for the tournament would it have worked? TVNZ only has 7 RWC19 games (of the 48) and at this stage we have no idea which games those are.

Optus had it priced at $15/mth as thats the price for their sports package (albeit for Optus customers - that limitation was dropped for Fifa18). As it only runs for 1 month, only $15/tournament. If it had been $100 for the tournament it might have had less technical issues and recouped some of its $8m investment.

Rugby Union has a paltry global audience but a potential audience of ~1 million in NZ (RWC11 case in point) restricted by the 80% audience coverage for decent broadband. Not exactly massive. Is $100 a fair and reasonable price? Would it have been a reasonable price for the beautiful game?

For eligible Optus customers is was 'free' (part of their mobile or broadband package, much like Lightbox is for Spark). To answer the question, had it been entirely streaming only (no FTA, no pay tv), I don't think there would be many people prepared to stomach $100 for the tournament. $15-20 would seem like the correct price point, given the low viewership numbers, and time of the games (mostly overnight). Compare that to Fan Pass on Spark which is $30 per month for a variety of codes (including Netball, League and Union) which have interest to a wider range of kiwis.

The other thing to consider is that streaming sport is a new concept in New Zealand. Other than Fanpass (which has no advertising that I've seen) and a few people who buy global passes for other sports (e.g. NBA, NFL, WWE) most people are going to come to the RWC next year, and ask "how the heck do I watch this thing?" Yes, we are tech savvy and have an Internet enabled TV, but a lot of mum and dad families aren't, or even worse don't have a suitable broadband connection.
