I really struggled with watching SA vs Romania. It was actively unpleasant watching to be honest. I knew the result before I started, which didn't help, but it was just so lopsided. Hard to blame SA players, as they are still competing for places in match-day squads.

I find it amusing the number of people who are saying sacking Rennie was a massive mistake. Neither him or EJ were likely to take a Squad to France with a really decent chance of winning the RWC. The likely difference is a quarterfinals exit vs a potential pool match exit. Rennie was gone at the end of this term, and EJ has a focus on the longer-term goals. I am not saying EJ is going to work magic with Australia, but in terms of development and outcomes, EJ's plan looks better long term.

On current performance, we look like we will struggle to get past the Quarters. I really hope we will, but we will need the performance of the year to get past SA or Ireland, though I'd prefer Ireland slightly over SA.  We can absolutely beat both teams, but we would need a significant improvement in various parts of our game. If we are foxing right now, we are leaving our run pretty late.

I don't think we can win a straight physical battle with SA. Our focus needs to be on tiring their big slow forwards out, better kicking and better kick chase. Territory will be important. We need to impress on the referee we don't want continual stoppages, and keep the ball in play. If they play Willie Le Roux at full back, he is exploitable under pressure. IMO we will really struggle without Sam Cane and as much as it makes me gag, Frizzell, playing at the level he has shown he can this year.

Some excellent analysis in there.

“...[the All Blacks] not affecting the breakdown particularly well, five turnovers won per game [ranked 15th]."

That was an area of concern for me against France and Namibia.

Dupont is likely out for the rest of the tournament for France. The cost of that will be hard to calculate, but with him and Ntamack gone, I'd estimate their chances of winning the RWC have plummetted.

That isn't to say they aren't still a good team, but Dupont missing is so huge to the way they play. Looking back over the last year years, they play fairly average rugby when he isn't there.

Gutted for him and France, genuinely, but it removes a fairly significant threat if we make it far enough to play them again.

I'm just glad there are two good games to watch this round, potentially the game of the pool play so far in Ireland vs South Africa and Monday morning should be a cracker with Wales v Australia

I'm picking SA and Wales fwiw

I'm picking SA as I think they will beat the Irish up, although with a 7-1 bench any hiccup out in the backs (early injury/red card) might cost them dearly.

Wales v Aus much harder to pick as they are both woeful.

I can't deny I am hoping that it backfires.

I expect this to be an unpopular opinion, but here it is.

Shannon Frizzel is an ahole on many levels. Assaulting a woman outside a bar is bad enough, and I have fairly strong views on NZR continuing to employ him, but they did. Now he is off to Japan! You'd think he might hang around and show a little loyalty back for the loyalty NZR showed him.

As well as he has been playing this year, as far as I am concerned, he can stay over there.

Oh what a game, It really did look like SA were going to take it in the final minutes. It was good nailbiting rugby by two of the worlds best teams. Well done Ireland.

That was some match between SA and Ireland. Glad I didn't have a horse in the race. I assume that means we face Ireland in the Quarters so long as we beat Italty in the pools?

Anyone who thinks Jacques Nienaber is the 'coach' of SA just needs to watch who is doing all the talking in the coaches box. Jacques Nienaber seems to be the guy that fronts in the press, and is the whipping boy for the decisions that Rassie makes. The traffic lights system is a farce and stinks of Rassie type tactics as is the 7/1 split.

What position does Faf play when 21 comes on? He was out there all the whole time. He didn't seem to be playing Half back that often.

SA's placekicking was pretty awful, almost certainly the difference in this match.

Those super short passes, often look forward to me.

Watching the first 20-30 minutes of this match, really dented my confidence that we can compete with either SA or Ireland. I doubt we can compete physically in the forwards and will need the game to be open and flowing to have a decent chance. We basically need to run their forwards into the ground.

James Lowe was poor today for Ireland. I don't really feel that the experiment has been that successful. He is average to poor in defence, and whilst he does have a massive boot, it's less accurate than it should be. In space he is quick.

Super entertaining game to watch. Defensive effort on both sides was phenomenal. SA should have won it, but missing those kicks cost them the game. Missed 2 penalties and one conversion, as I recall? SA will also be disappointed not to have taken advantage of the many set piece mistakes by Ireland, especially in the 1st half.

Not sure which would be the preferable team for NZ to face in the 1/4's, but barring any tremendous upsets it will be Ireland. Here's hoping the AB's show up and play up to their potential.

England appear to be finding form. Starting Smith at FB gives them a 'two pivot' backline, much like NZ have been playing (for better or for worse, depending one one's point of view). The draw sets up well for them, likely getting through to the semi-finals.

I don't get the vitreol towards the 7-1 split. Any team could do it if they want. It's not against the rules. The other side to making a 7-1 split is the risk you take if you lose backs to injury/cards. SA obviously think that risk of worth taking to play to their strength. But lose a couple of key backs and it starts to backfire really quick.

And who cares what position any player actually plays in on the field?

No vitirol at all, just seems a little strange.
I don't care what position a player plays I was simply curious what his role was after 21 came on since 10 remained

If this turns out to be true, what respect I have for Eddie Jones, will plummet.

Having said that, if his heart isn't in it, then he should bail, but it would be a disgraceful way to treat a team.

Wow what a game.  Ireland very nearly kicked the game away.  Gave me flashbacks to Hong Kong ala Stephen Donald.

Now what we need to do to beat Ireland in the Quarters.  B Barrett to the bench, J Barrett back to center, Fainga’anuku to the wing with Telea.  And Roigard in the bench role instead of Christie.  Thats the backs sorted.

Someone else can have a crack at the forwards
