There’s a RWC TV commentator - a guy with a Scottish accent - who really irritates me. He adds nothing to the game - just calls a series of names as players handle the ball, contributing no analysis or depth. He just states the bleeding obvious all the time - with flowery language.

I’m currently watching Fiji-Georgia delayed and he’s commentating. I’ve put the TV on mute - much more pleasant watching.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

OMG Georgia v Fiji was an absolute BANGER match. Comfortably the best of the tournament. Glued to my seat for the 80 minutes. So close!

Some shocking misses during the match. The forward pass that wasn't, the swinging arm to the head that should have been at least a yellow card which absolutely would have changed the game, and the ref refusing to allow Georgia's perfectly legitimate request for a scrum as a result of a knock on at the base of the lineout.

I really expected Georgia to be able to sustain 30 minutes of the pace they started with, then get smoked by Fiji on fitness, but they hung in there.

Such an excellent match!

Games are weekly, each team also has one ‘bye’ week = a two week break. Rugby is a wee bit more physical than football, playing more than weekly not a good idea.

reducing the tournament to only the top 8 or 12 or whatever teams takes away the opportunity for other nations to aspire to making the tournament, ultimately hurting participation in the sport. Also takes away the ‘upset’ potential (Japan beating South Africa in 2015).

personally, I love seeing countries like Chile or Portugal putting their hearts into the game. They know they can’t win but they’re going to give it everything they have. And over time many become more competitive as they gain experience (Japan, Samoa, Fiji, Tonga).

If the All Whites get hosed by Brazil in a football World Cup match the players would still call it one of their life’s highlights. Brazil! In a World Cup!

Same for RWC minnows against the rugby superpowers. Those guys from Namibia and Portugal will be living their dreams.

Plus we shouldn’t forget the fans who get to see their players at the World Cup. Many of them are overjoyed just to see their team score a try. Chile vs Argentina was like that. Argentina were never looked like losing but see the excitement from Chile’s fans when they thought they had a try … and the disappointment was heart-wrenching when the try was disallowed.

If indeed Fakatava was the culprit, there is a perfect irony to a scrum half 'dropping the ball', so to speak.

Hawke's Bay should fix it and hand it back to NZRU.

They are not worthy.

Whilst the scoreline didn't indicate so, SA B struggled a bit with Tonga. Tonga's physicality really was quite telling. They scored some great tries against SA and it was quite a good game to watch. Luke Pearce's communication really is excellent, and I thought he had a good game overall.

Eddie Jones is really taking the brunt of the fury from the fans and media like a champ. He has the odd moment where he gets a bit testy, but he has refused to blame anyone but himself. ARU should grow a set and stand next to him, and say they own the decision to replace Rennie, and accepted his plan to refresh the team with a longer term vision.  The players should really grateful he has taken all that heat on their behalf, some of the performances by players who should be better, are pretty poor.

You can lament the results all you like, but at the end of the day, exit pool vs exit quarters, when long term, the benefits of exiting in the pool is likely much better, is really fairly irrelevant. I think the players could have done much better themselves. So many silly mistakes you can't really blame Eddie for.

I'd have taken Hooper with me, as a minimum. I wouldn't have taken Cooper, who is mercurial and not exactly a traditional 10, which they need at least one of. I'd probably of taken Foley in his place. I'd likely have played both but only for the first 30 minutes, then let the Rookies on.

You can say what you want about Eddie, but he has really stood up and owned his decisions. You can't ask for more than that. People might disagree with the youth policy, but it was one he and ARU made together, and if people want something different than the last 20 years, they need to make changes, big changes.

This is a really good point and full credit to Eddie for doing this, Rugby Australia owe it to him to stand up and stand by him, visibly.

I'd like to see a close-up of the break. If it was in one piece of oak it's very bad behaviour. If it was a glue line between two planks possibly a poor job making the recent replica shield. The powder is now claimed to be from plaster of paris filler behind the centre embossed metal.

Course it's plaster of paris. And the rolled up bank note is just there for slurping up some spilt Tui. 😀

Sobering Stats:

To put this into context New Zealand have conceded an average of 20 points a match over the previous 12 months. During the same time span South Africa average 13 and Ireland 15. In their previous five games, South Africa have averaged eight points conceded a match. New Zealand average 20. Over the whole 12-month span, only one team has scored 20 points against Ireland. Eight teams have scored 20 points or more against New Zealand.

Funny eh ! I've been watching some of the highlights and I'm really enjoying having commentators who are not Grant 'nasal' Nisbett for a change.

Who cares exactly how many metres away from the 22 the ball is ? Grant Nisbett does.
