Batman: The news says Ireland vs ABs

Does anyone know if I will be able to watch the ABC match(es) live on free to air (legal, nz) as I don't have sky?

thanks so they will show all AB knock out matches it would suggest

i thought they had originally said they'd show live the quarterfinal where they expected AB to qualify tops, but the ABs didn't qualify top of the group so they have changed it i guess

or maybe the flexibility was there all along

thanks

wait a sec

Sky expected ABs to qualify second?! (unless they changed it - they had a month to change it)

if you look at the SF they will show, it's the one where the Pool A 2nd place team would end up

I am sure it wasn't like that at the start of the tournament (ie i thought they'd show the other half of the draw)

all in all, all good!

So, we play the Irish next Sunday morning at 8am. The AB's will need to be on top form to beat that Irish team. Should be a great match.

The Fijians should beat Portugal tomorrow morning to put the Aussies out. Mr Jones might be looking for a new job?

Well Foster has gone and done it. I can't believe Christie over Roigard, Cane over Papa'ili or Ardie not being captain. Understand Talea broke team protocol so LF comes onto the wing. A couple of undercooked props to start and two quite inexperinced ones on the bench in Newell and Williams.

I can't see this going well against the powerhouse that is Ireland. Is this Fozzies finale?

Agreed.  Have to say I am not surprised, its a pretty typical Foster et al. team.  He is consistent if nothing else with his preferred side.  I was particularly perplexed by Roigards omission as he does offer something extra if its required.  And if it isnt then Smith would likely do 80% of the game anyway.  My biggest concern is BB at fullback.  He has shown the tendency to meaningless kick the ball away when under pressure, putting Irleand back on attack.

If Cane fires we will have the usual candidates jump to his defence and finger point about how foolish the rest of us are.  However that requires we look at singular good performances and ignore the rest 🤷‍♂️.

I think that the AB's have a 33% chance of winning based on their record against difficult teams.  I dont think Foster has picked the best team to help do that, but Fosters going to Foster

As an England fan I probably see this game quite differently to nervous All Blacks fans but just don't see Ireland winning. I know they've beaten NZ a few times in the last 2-3 years but World Cups are different and they have never been past the quarter final. Biggest game of all of their lives, and I just don't see them beating NZ in a world cup knockout match. It should be an epic game in any case.

For me personally I'm not nervous, I genuinely believe Ireland will win as they are the better team. They are the favourites across all bookies and I will be shocked if NZ do win.

It’s the World Cup, anything can really happen. I do think it’s going to be close, either side winning by about 3-12 points. But my money is on Ireland.

I'm not nervous.

I would really like to see the game flow (good luck with that - I'm sure Ireland will stop the game at every chance they get -IREvSCO I was annoyed after the first 20 minutes of the game probably had the water teams on the field for half of it).

I'd like to see the ABs be accurate and disciplined (also, good luck with that going on the last couple of years).

If both the above can happen, NZ keep 15 players on the field, and catch and pass OK, then we've got a good chance of progressing.

New Zealand:

Beauden Barrett, Will Jordan, Rieko Ioane, Jordie Barrett, Leicester Fainga’anuku, Richie Mo’unga, Aaron Smith;

Ardie Savea, Sam Cane (capt), Shannon Frizell, Scott Barrett, Brodie Retallick, Tyrel Lomax, Codie Taylor, Ethan de Groot.

Reserves: Dane Coles, Tamaiti Williams, Fletcher Newell, Sam Whitelock, Dalton Papalii, Finlay Christie, Damian McKenzie, Anton Lienert-Brown.

My only 'real' issue with the team sheet is Findlay Christie. Apparently, he is better defensively. I can't dispute that as I am too lazy to look up his stats, but against a potentially tiring Irish side, I want pace and Roigard gives us that, much better than Christie IMO.

LF for Telea after a curfew breach (what a dumbass). LF post tackle meters is reassuring, we just need to make sure he doesn't run away from support and get isolated and turned over.

RM is going to need to have his biggest and best test this weekend I think. I really hope we can disrupt their set piece and front up front to tire the forwards.

100%. Setting up for defense allows the Irish to play their style of possession-heavy game at a slow pace. We need to absolutely run them ragged from the get-go. The game has to be won in the first twenty minutes, effectively. Selecting for 'defense' and playing a slow game metre by metre just takes the game away from our strengths and plays it into theirs.

There's nothing about our tendency to go for box kicks/short high bombs in our own half or discipline that suggests we can actually out-grind Ireland with smart on-field decision making and ball retention. We already know that doesn't work and we can't do it. It probably won't work against any of the European teams we come up against from here on in and we know it doesn't work against SA.

So I have been thinking about Ireland for a bit. I am not saying we will win tomorrow morning but there are some points to consider:

3 of the tests we have lost to Ireland have come off the back of the following factors:

1) Heavy injuries forced us to play many players out of position.

2) A Red Card and 2 yellows in the second test of their tour. Pretty hard to win against anyone decent in that circumstance. Assuming all players stay on the field, that should even the contest a bit.

3) The third test they should have lost a player to the bin for the game for Retallicks broken cheek.

Factors to help us.

Our forwards are performing significantly better than they did back then.

We have a fully fit squad.

Better assistant coaches.

For me this game is win win :) If we win, people will complain less endlessly about Foster. If we lose, there will be the usual "Everything is Fosters fault" for a couple of weeks, then the focus can move away from him and onto Robertson.
