I think I'm reasonably happy with the shape of the team, selections, etc.  I'd discussed captaincy with my mates last week and we'd said it would be unlikely that'd take it from Barrett directly.  But we thought perhaps if he was out injured and Ardie did a good job, then when he came back they might leave it with Ardie. So the first part of that has happened...

The one thing that still really concerned me was how passive our defence was at times.  When their big men (Wilson, etc) were running hard at us, they were consistently getting over the gain line and making 3 - 5 metres.  With Skelton and Valentini coming back, that could be more of a problem this week.  In my view we need a much faster line speed and dominant tackles behind the gain line.  That's where I'd expect guys like Parker to really shine.  Easier said than done I guess.

The Aussies made considerable gains over the advantage line - on the odd occasion we'd push them back, they'd be back ahead of where they were within a single phase.

Looking back on the pivotal Ardie turnover penalty, I get the sense that other than that, and maybe one more occasion, there simply weren't any others? The Aussies on the other hand definitely outdid us in that regard also.

Auckland players making the difference.

Yes, Reiko came on and immediately conceded a dumb penalty that cost us 7 points. :)

It wasn't a terrible performance on Saturday night (though it was quite frustrating at times) , but often I watch us on attack and don't really understand what we are aiming for. Much like the women's team, the focus is on speed, but the number of errors we make and turn overs we concede as a result of that speed, feels counter productive.

The number of times a player sees a gap, and makes some gain line, and then gets turned over because there is no support to clean out the jackler, and then getting turned over is infuriating.

I thought there was a lot to like, and some of the same dumb old stuff.  I thought our pack was decent to good, our scrum was better, our lineout was better. Not perfect, but a decent improvement.  Scott Barretts penalty count is concerning, but he suffers from the same fate as Sam Cane. He's heavily contributing but not as visible as Savea. People don't seem to understand that Ardie only gets to do what he does, because he's supported by the other players.

Dmac continues to prove he isn't right at 10, and unfortunately wasn't his usual accurate self off the T, which was surprising. Everyone has an off-night.  It's a worry we don't have BB at 10 for a while.

Carter looks assured at 14, Tupea was excellent, it will be interesting to see if he continues to be that effective if given more chances.

What is it with Australians attacking the legs of our centers and just attacking them in general?! I couldn't believe that head on head clash wasn't both a red card AND Jordie for a HIA.

Paddy T is having a reasonably good run. His problem in my view is his consistency. He runs pretty hot and cold.

One thing that seems to have improved, though it's not quite a pattern yet, is that in the past, if we were ahead in the last quarter we would almost seem to just defend entirely and try and run out the clock. What was encouraging is seeing us continue to attack through that last quarter, AND get rewarded with a try.  Our exits which were a serious problem most of 2024, seem better now.  It seemed pretty obvious they were trying something during that period, and it wasn't working.

Lewis Moody - Former English Captain has been diagnosed with Motor Neuron Disorder.

This is absolutely horrible news. It's a despicable disease.

According to ChatGPT, some studies (limited evidence) show 15 x increased likelihood of Rugby Players contracting it. (0.78%) vs (11.7%).  There is no absolute indication of causation, but the numbers are certainly concerning.

What a Quarter Finals Series for NPC over the weekend! A couple of 'upsets', and a couple of incredibly close matches.

If you are supporting Counties, you can be rightfully proud of an incredible effort over the last 6 weeks. You made Canterbury work massively for that win. 100 minutes of intense attack and defence. It was almost a classic. Tom Christie is an absolute machine. A little like Kirifi in my opinion, never really got the recognition he deserved.

Waikato being pipped by Otago surprised me somewhat.

Patty T out of the Northern Tour due to Injury.

Looks like Robertson has decided he is going to split experimenting from the Northern Tour (a somewhat traditional way for new talent to be tested), in favour of letting Jamie Joseph test people under the AB's XV. Not sure I agree with that, however, with the gap between nations constantly closing and the NZ Publics intolerance of loosing, it's hard to argue he's doing the wrong thing. I don't believe it's in our best interests, but we are short sighted as a fan base.

The inclusion of Christie (and Ioane) seems a particularly strange choice, but I know there are some here that will be incensed Reece was included. Preston would have been who I would have taken, we could always have called in Ioane and Christie if they were required, and let them add their experience to the XV team.

I'd love to know what is going on in Robertsons head re the ongoing conservative selections, if it's just the pressure of the team underperforming, or something else he is going for.

I'll be surprised if the coaching setup is the same this time next year. One or more assistant coaches probably aren't the right fit for this team right now.

It's a pretty tasty all southern derby for the NPC Final next Saturday night. Both teams were pretty dominant in their respective semi's, the result wasn't contentious, which is pretty good. I expect with home advantage, Canterbury will be too strong for Otago, who have been pretty good all season.

If we win, it would be a nice way to be able to say goodbye to one of NZ's most prolific and accurate tacklers, Tom Christie. An absolute machine when it comes to workrate. He's arguably been NPC forward of 2025, and certainly Canterburys best week after week after week.

In NPC only 3 teams have won away from home in the history of the competition. Canterbury (twice), Wellington (once) and Tasman (Once). Otago have never been in a Final, and therefore have never won a title.

Interestingly, Otago have never won the championship division either.

It will be very impressive if Otago's first win, in either division, was away from home.

Otago have one a couple of times in the nineties.  It might have been a slightly different comp name and format, but they were still the top team in NZ.

I wonder how happy NZR are about an all-South-Island NPC Grand Final.

I imagine there's a certain amount of muttering & beard stroking at the absence of the usual 'powerhouses' of NZ Rugby.
Some of you may be old enough to remember the days when "New Zealand Rugby is great when Auckland rugby is great" was a devoutly believed truism

To the surprise of not many I imagine, Jason Holland departs the All Blacks after the 2025 season.

Huh? I imagine Auckland not being part of the NPC finals wouldn't have surprised too many ?  I mean, I think I expected them to do better than they did, but Quarters would have been as far as you might have hoped based on a best case scenario.
