Ha. Who'd have thunk it?

My question relates to the fabric options - Halcyon (Dynema by another name) or ballistic nylon.

Halcyon is far lighter (about 700g lighter empty than the Red Oxx bag I normally use) and I am trying to pack very light for a 3 week solo trip to SEA. 700g is meaningful in that scenario.

However, I cannot use the bag as 'one bag travel' and carry it on for this trip, as I need to use my carry-on allowance for my cameras (which only weigh 7kg, cough, cough, honest guv). Ergo the bag will be checked (Air NZ to SGN) but will be then mine for lugging around airports, in and out of taxis/tuktuks, on trains etc etc. hence the need to minimise weight.

I'm unsure whether the Halcyon fabric would survive the rigours of airport baggage handling systems, so wondered if there was anyone who might have practical experience of both fabrics. @scottjpalmer ?

A related, more general question: what do Air NZ regard as a "personal item" for carry on? Their website is a bit unspecific in that regard: it mentions handbags (yet some of those are pretty large these days) and small laptop bags but has no actual size guide nor weight guide for a personal item.

The only ones I could get at that price would probably nick the laptop.

I was thinking that maybe at the price for the laptop bags they actually came with a free laptop? :) 

I bought my wife a "Tri-Star" with all the trimmings for her birthday a few months back and she loves it!

Can pass any questions on to her if you like - it has done a successful trip to Melbourne so far...

Halcyon. Build quality is good and she is chuffed with it. Idea is that it will be carry on and not subjected to the traumas of the Baggage Mafia, but I think it would survive if it did!

Geektastic: Ok. Looks like Halcyon would work then. Now need to work out the tax and other levies. Off to calculator website!

When I ordered ours, I actually split the order into two - the bag straight to me at work and the accoutrements to our shop and ship as they were small and light but still of significant value as far as duty was concerned.

I must have got lucky, as although I had calculated that charges would be due, the bag arrived in record time and completely unmolested and un-garnished by Customs and Excise...

Taken just now in Indianapolis

I travel purely carry on, hence the Aeronaut 45 max carryon size on the bottom. Can't vouch for how it stands up to baggage handlers but all 3 of the fabrics you see there look like the day I got them and they have all done at least 4x 3 week northern hemisphere trips and multiple Ozzie ones.
