Can you insure a relative's car with you as the main driver and the relative as the second driver with no repercussions? Or can only the registered owner of the car be the "main driver" on car insurance policies...

Hey, you might run into the whole: "You can't insure what you don't own" issue. Better to ask the insurance company directly as you don't want your cover to end up being useless because your insurance decides you misled them.

I've got two cars registered and insured (with AMI) in my name, with my kids named as main drivers (one per each). Wasn't a problem, though I've never had to make a claim.

Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?

Registered owner means nothing. You can name any driver on any vehicle policy, or if they are over 25 most are automatically covered and don’t need to be named. I’m not sure your reason why you want to insure someone else’s vehicle but whatever you do be straight up on the circumstances to avoid a claim being rejected.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

We did it for financial reasons mainly, using my no-claims and multi-policy discount whilst the kids buildup their no-claims record. Not 100% sure but I think recall AMI saying that the registered owner of the vehicle must be the policy owner. (The cars belong to the kids though, and if any speed-camera fines were to arrive they would be handed straight over.)

Like yourself, I'm also an advocate of being absolutely up-front about everything with insurance companies. Don't want to give them any ammo to reject a claim.

How do you build up a no claims record if you aren't a policy holder? They may be driving but you make the claims.

AMI assures me they benefit from this because they are named as the main driver on the policy. Not that much different I guess if one of them had an accident and I had to make a claim. The excess would be a lot higher (they're under 25) than it would be if I had been driving.

The reason i ask is that I got quoted $500 cheaper for an over 25 as the main driver and an under 25 as a listed driver for AMI.

Seems steep. When the kiddies first got their licences and we added them as under-25s to mine and wifey's cars the premium went up by just over a $100. I do recall it being really expensive to get fully comp on the kid's cars with them as the main driver so we went 3rd party-fire-and-theft on those.

I also think that car insurance premiums in general have gone up a lot over the last 12 months.

Back in my day working at a motor vehicle insurer (admittedly quite some time ago), the way round it was to put the policy in joint names and then just name whoever was the primary and secondary driver.
