Hi All, can anyone recommend a hotel right on the beach at Gold Coast? Obviously there are heaps of them, but I'd prefer to pick based on recent experience! I'm after:

- Nice (4 or 4 1/2 star)
- Something close to shops/malls/restaurants
- Child-friendly (3 year old), so perhaps a playground in the hotel or very near to one?
- Free/reasonable wifi

Any other tips, suggestions on what to do there would be appreciated too!

Peppers on broadbeach (Oracle Building) was quite nice last time I was there.

Would definitely recommend this one. Very close to the beach 2min walk and about 10-15min walk to main Surfers beach. Doesn't have a playground but there is a nice swimming pool on the property.

Turtle Beach Resort use to always be our go-to place with young kids, but haven’t been there for a few years so not sure if it’s still the most popular for families.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

we went 2 years ago and stayed at La Grande Apartments in Broadbeach.

has Pool but no playground as such. Manager was extremely helpful and accommodation was very clean and comfortable.

Right on the beach and a cool park about 2 blocks away which happens to be right across the road from the Oasis Shopping complex.

Easy walk to catch bus or light rail.

I'd also recommend Turtle Beach Resort if you're after a family getaway. It's not what I'd call upper-class by any stretch, I believe it's 4-star rated (if you want luxury, look at something like Peppers or Soul), but is a pretty versatile family accommodation at a reasonable price. There's a pool, mini waterpark, playground, restaurant and convenience store on site. It's about 400m from Mermaid Beach and about 1.5km from the Pacific Fair shopping centre. Only thing we'd point out is they do not have ramps/lifts to the upstairs apartments, so if you have a pushchair/stroller, either try for ground floor, or be aware you'll be carrying it up/down stairs. To be fair, if we were going without the kids, we'd look elsewhere, but when taking the little ones with you, it offers a ton of convenient fun things to do right on site.

Airbnb and VRBO will have tons of options and customer reviews.

We rented a 3 bdrm apartment in Mantra Crown Towers and it was pretty good and pretty cheap. Block or so to the beach and walking distance to supermarket.

All good recommendations. Just be aware that a number of the apartments/hotels very close to the beach will possibly have younger holidaymakers who don't want to hire a car. This will mean late night parties, noise and possibly large groups. Sometimes those places just a little bit further away from the beach or not quite in the centre are better if you have a young child. Friends also stay at Turtle Beach regularly and recommend it highly with their kids.

We normally stay in Broadbeach as its a little less busy than central Surfers.

If you do stay in Broadbeach there is a great park on Old Burleigh Road - Kurrawa park its right next to the Kurrawa Surf Club and opposite the Oasis.

There is also the Broadwater Parklands Rockpools in Southport, really good wading pools for under 5's and has a cafe near by. Catch the G:Link - light rail train runs from Broadbeach all the way to Southport.

When I have been there I have found the bus network pretty good. If you get a Go card it makes things pretty easy.

Thanks all for the suggestions - now I just have to find flights from Dunedin that don't involve stupidly long layovers!!

Mate, it's legit been so hot down here for the last few days (35 during the day, 22 during the night) that I may as well stay here if I want sub-tropical conditions!! :-D
