In terms of what you get up to for the days you are there, how much planning do you do?  This is more a vacation style.

When I go with family members some of them are foodies, well I guess when people go on trips it is just relaxing, observing and eating.  Some do but many don't specific interests.  Like a attending a cooking course, doing a bit of camping or hiking or travel photog.  I know a few of them who have done that however or joined a photography tour.  I find I spend sometime researching online before I depart like where we want to spend the time just walking around, and pencil down a couple of nice restaurants for the cuisine they are into and details about which train station to get on and off to the different areas we want to see and for the few tourist attractions that are worthy of a visit.  Or do any of you just turn up and ask or just stroll around and just go with the flow?

After a bit of travelling myself.  I don't do so much tourist attractions now.  In the past, I would pretty much go blind and visit the top spots recommended by the Lonely Planet or visit these number of temples or churches or these museums or these galleries or these flea / farmer / weekend markets.

As for resources, I just like to do google searches for "____________ blog itinerary" or "what to do in ________________". I also check YouTube for videos on the area. If it's a road trip, I try to find potential stops and where I should be ending up at night by using google maps.

It depends on what kind of holiday you want, sightseeing or adventure?

If it's sightseeing then planning out is the best as you will always be inundated with crowds.  So it's good when you're travelling to developed countries in say America and Europe where you want to see certain attractions especially when you paid a lot of money to fly from our corner of the world.

For adventure however it's great just doing it on the fly.  When i was in South East Asia i only booked my first night and my last night around the airports, then just travelled where i wanted to via boat and scooter and found accomodation on the day.  Just grab a sim card with some mobile data to help get your maps sorted and finding accomodation, most the time you could just turn up and ask if they have rooms and they almost always said yes and were willing to offer lower prices than say booking.com/tripadvisor.  I also did this in peak holiday season and never run into any issues with out of vacany etc, to be honest when it comes to SEA it's only really the massive luxury hotel chains that families go to get booked out and they're way too boring.  I could never be bothered spending money big money on those places when in SEA your money goes a long way and im out and about for 16 hours a day anyway.
