Has anyone done Route 66 lately? There are fair few apps and websites offering guides, has anyone got any references to give?

Hi sport, surprised there have been no replies.

We have done a little bit of the route twice, once coming out of the Grand Canyon and once out of Denver. The furtherest we have been is Flagstaff. We downloaded Route 66 Pocketbook from Amazon/Kindle to get some ideas before we left. It is only a 30 minute read but had plenty of tips and references at the end for further reading. It’s on Amazon for $US1.09 so won’t break the bank. We also watched Billy Connollys DVD and managed to pick up a DVD pack from The Warehouse featuring a family who took their (premium) bus from Chicago to Santa Monica. Typical 80s video but still cool.

We enjoyed Williams, Seligman, Hackberry and Oatman. Very touristy but still cool especially as we were lucky enough to meet Angel Delgadillo and family at his famous barbershop. If you stop in Oatman do watch out for the donkeys, they don’t care where they leave a deposit and can be quite aggressive.

We loved the people in the small towns who seemed pleased to see us. Mostly Europeans, Aussie’s and Kiwis on the road. Maybe Americans have already done the trip as they seemed outnumbered when we were there. The lighting at days end is well worth stopping for if you have a good camera, simply stunning bouncing off the mountains.

I can scan an A4 map from the Historic Route 66 Assoc of Arizona showing popular stops including Mile Posts and what exit to take if you would like. Looking at it now we missed a lot of places!

The only bit of Route 66 I have done is from Kingman to Oatman, having done a (loooong) day trip from Vegas. I found Oatman fascinating, but echo @Kiwifan above, the donkey poo is everywhere.

 

I presume you have given serious study to the Billy Connolly Route 66 series 😄

From what I've read on Trip Advisor, just about everyone recommends Travel Route 66: A Guide to the History, Sights, and Destinations Along the Main Street of America. It is written by Jim Hinckley,
