I'm going to ask a (possible) dumb question here - but people from any country can still come here right?
Just they need:
- quarantine/isolation for 14 days on arrival, and
- pay for the MIQ charges?
Is that right? So a tourist leaving, say, Rio de Janeiro today can come to NZ as long as they do the above, or is it a case of, nope, border totally closed, don't even bother getting on the plane?
I'm just confused as I hear all these stories in the news about arrivals from China and India, but yet I thought our borders were completely closed.

No. Only Kiwi citizens/residents can come here. If Kiwi citizens/residents go on holiday etc they can come back but they have to pay MIQ
There have been cases of "essential' people arriving like the Wiggles, America's Cup people etc, the film crews a while back

As of 30 April 2021 though, partners and dependents of those in New Zealand, including temporary visa holders, can apply for permission to travel to New Zealand (provided they are granted a visa as well).

Partners/dependants of NZ citizens/Permanent residents have been able to do this for a while, this recent chance is for those on Temporary/work Visas who arrived without their partners/dependants before the border closure.. ( and it is quite restrictive, health workers + a few more)
People on Work/Temp Visas who arrived after the border closure have been able to bring their Partners/dependents in with them already
But there are more changes on the way next week, so lets wait and see

Yep, at least its an economic win for NZ. Maybe not when green travellers are mixing with red travellers from PNG at one of the BNE airports

TBH, I know many people who say they will not travel until they are vaccinated, even to OZ ( and potentially the Cooks)- things like BNE show that there is still risk (albeit small).... OZ interstate air travel is still only beginning to recover... OZ-NZ will likely mirror this recovery...

It's not about being vaccinated or not (though I am), it's about when you can be assured you won't get trapped in another country or having to MIQ regardless of your vaccination status. Until they know more about the longer term effects of being vaccinated, including the key bit of the puzzle, can you transmit the virus even if you are vaccinated, or until enough of the population is vaccinated that herd immunity should reduce it's risk of serious side effects, I'd expect travel to be minimal. Either the priviledged, entitled, or desperate.

Surely this doesn't come as a surprise to anyone? I'm sure I raised it earlier in this thread or elsewhere. This early in the process it would mostly be families travelling to reunite rather than tourists?

, including the key bit of the puzzle, can you transmit the virus even if you are vaccinated
Article a earlier this week said vaccination reduced transmission by between 1/3 and 1/2. You still get infected, but you wont get sick, but you can transmit, albeit at a lesser rate. A previous article on the same issue said that the main reason why transmission is less, is that you don't get sick so don't cough and sneeze as much. The main thing is the vaccine is just to stop you getting sick or die, at about a 90% + or - rate for some of the brands
I wonder if it gets to a stage where most people everywhere are vaccinated if they can then come? I have some friends from France who would love to come here again to visit but they're not citizens, however if they got their coronavirus vaccinations and could show it...maybe they would be allowed in then? Just a thought - although I'm sure this has probably crossed the minds of those at Immigration at least a few times already.
Chris Keall (NZ Herald business): "A Herald biz team member has just been to Brisbane on a personal trip. Like Maurico's recent trip to Sydney, the airport was near-deserted at both ends. Can understand why some pushed so hard for the bubble. But it's just running ahead of events, and human psychology"

I guess that's what they call opening the borders in 2022. Everyone welcome, and while that will bring Covid in with no obstruction, it will be endemic and that's the way it will have to be, there isn't a choice
