It's about time.  (Side note, isn't this topic more for the "Planes,  trains, and automobiles" forum?)

NZtechfreak: Well past time, I fly back from Wellington in a few weeks with AirNZ, good times!

You'll notice that the B737 isn't on the list though. Hope you are traveling on an Airbus. Must be something to do with the age if the aircraft.

networkn: It's always been a strange thing really. If it was really that big of a deal, how come more planes don't crash when people "forget" :)

It's not the electronic signals they worry about.
It's so people don't get distracted if an emergency occur during takeoff and landing.

Not sure if that was the reason.
Aircraft were never wired or tested for RFI, there weren't really any standards.Cable looms were not shielded because they didn't really need to be. All the interference was ground based.

there are certification costs involved

the 733 is going end of life and being replaced with A320 so there is no point

You didn't when cellphones were allowed on planes for the 2 or so years Air NZ were offering the service and in the 90's and early 2000's when Air NZ actually had phones on each plane for people to use.

I think it's ironic that people are worried about phone usage on planes when for years airlines were obsessed by putting phone in every seat and promoting the ability to make a call from every seat!
