I actually would really like one of the electric scooters that they all had over there. But I bet they would be way way too powerfull to be used here without actually being a motorbike with all the license hassles that entails.

I indicate left when I leave a roundabout, even if going straight ahead.  I don't remember the last time I saw someone else do it.

NZers find changes to the road rules too confusing and ignore them.  I can't expect to make a simple left turn, if someone is oncoming and indicating an oncoming left from across the road, without keeping in mind they might think they can still make a go of it.  I have to honk to get people to go when they have right of way.

Oh wait, I did see someone come onto a roundabout indicating left.  But rather than taking the first left, they carried on and out the exit past me.  If I had been paying attention to their nutjob indicating, I would have had them colliding into the side of my car.  Maybe they were hedging their bets.

This is what most people who to attempt to indicate like we are meant to get wrong, and therefore for the small size of our roundabouts most flag the indicating and fall back to the 'if I'm going straight.. I'm going straight and wont show otherwise'

Far too many times see people indicate left, go straight past the first left and use the consecutive after ala straight. Or worse indicate right, then change to left with all intentions to go straight ahead (often on 2 lane ones catching people on the left approach out who attempt to enter the outter lane)

Some of our small ones are a bit silly to be able to do the whole, indicate before your exit. Some of them may be less than a half car length or single flick of the indicator from the 2nd to 3rd/4th exit and so on. Which can sometimes be the cause of the no indicators activated curse. Or rage cause-you-indicated-wrong cases.

I too was taught to drive as if 'everyone else is out to kill you'.  It's severe but it does teach a healthy respect for others, and reinforces defensive driving techniques, I don't see how this discourages courtesy and co-operation, in fact I think this self preservation attitude teaches exactly that, with a triple dose of patience and understanding that others do make mistakes, including ones self, but if you leave enough room and enough time, and the other person has done the same, small mistakes may not end up big disasters.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

That's not the same as assuming everyone else on the road is an idiot. Driving as though everyone else on the road is out to kill you is a wise move!

Perhaps I may charitably replace the phrase with "is distracted".

It isn't hard to indicate left once you're at the midpoint, past the first exit.  I do it as a courtesy to anyone who might be at the exit past the one I am taking, so they know for sure they can enter and I won't be coming their way.

People who indicate left for the second exit (straight ahead) before they've even entered the roundabout should lose their drivers license - it shows a lack of thinking which one can only hope is not representative of their approach to other aspects of driving.

sdavisnz: I dont bother doing in NZ, not neccessary really, give way to me or we have a problem :)

Not indicating correctly is inconsiderate, illegal, causes indecision, hold ups and accidents. Driving is a privilege and a serious task either do it right or don't do it at all.

Speaking of round-abouts, I was in Tauranga just before Xmas for work and driving around I came across the round-about that had traffic lights in it.
That confused me and both times I went through it, almost forgetting each time to actually check the lights

Yep those roundabouts are real confusing for the first few times you come across them.  One of them still is, a terrible design..
