i heard that the co pilot was calming breathing away, and that he overrode the auto correction / anti crash electronics of the plane

It certainly looks like he did it - it just seems a bit early to be making firm conclusions.

DarthKermit: I hear that European airlines are rapidly introducing a similar policy of two in the cockpit at all times. It makes sense.

AirNZ have announced today also.

Actually I think, you'll find they have been carrying out this practice on some routes for quite a while, just not all routes.

1:  There's two Flight Attendants on an ATR
2:  I've never seen an ATR pilot use the toilet during flight, though no doubt it might occur on very rare occasions.
3.  The requirement is two crew members not two pilots.

You think?

An Airbus A320 has 2 pilots and 4 cabin crew. Of what use would a stewardess be on the flight deck if the remaining pilot decided to do this?

- Open the cabin door for captain while the other pilot was sending the plane in to a deliberate dive via manual control.
- Talk co-pilot out of diving the plane.
- Punch Co-Pilot
- Restore autopilot
- Help restrain co-pilot with captain after opening cabin door for captain.

I assume the flight attendants would be trained in the operation of the cockpit door, so in this particularly case they would have been able to allow access to the captain when he was outside bashing on the door.

So the pilot merely needs to incapacitate them first....

Depressed people are not the same as terrorists.

Terrorists will get their way despite all measures. Depressed people won't. They will be effectively deterred by someone else being there.

Now this German guy was a psycho. I'd go 20-80 of him crashing there plane by force.

In retrospect, it would have been a lot better if another person had been inside with the suicidal pilot. He/she might have been able to save the situation. A much higher chance of a successful outcome than what actually occurred.

In retrospect, it would have been a lot better if that pilot had done the world a favour and jumped off a tall building, only taking his life and not 149 innocent people.

He wanted to change the system. For the world to remember him. He is not depressed but a psychopath.

In retrospect it would have been better if he had sought help, had treatment and returned to a normal life...!

However, if you are going to make a statement, jumping alone off a building won't achieve that.

A particularly paranoid friend of mine suggested that the large number of aircraft incidents in the last 12 months or so are all connected....

He believes (via, it has to be said, at least reasonable sources, to wit a relative who served 15 years in US Special Forces specialising in Drone Warfare for the latter part of that) that all modern aircraft can in fact be controlled from the ground now but that the fact is not made public. He suggested that the Russians had a hand in the latest one as a way to put pressure on the Germans.

Personally, I think he looks good in a tinfoil hat, but you never know....
