I VPN to my Fritzbox 7390 so I can access security cameras, and you can connect out as well. Works fine. Wasn't too difficult to set up, but not trivial either. I put my steps on this thread.

So it's free but it's not. More spam coming your way. In that sense I'd rather pay for a service.
