Can someone explain feeding FR24? Aircraft have transponders, except small planes and the military.
Keen to know more.
SirHumphreyAppleby:I had to first enable Flight Crew, then searched for Geekzone.
I'm well.. obvious ;)

Try this: FR24 - How it works.
Even aircraft that don't have ADSB can still show up if you have enough receivers nearby - they can location the position of the aircraft based on knowing exactly where the receivers are, and exactly when the transmission arrived.
I do think FR24 is great.
We're across town from the airport (Chch), my wife flies back in tonight - check FR24 and her flight was 25 mins late (departure), but at present progress making up a bit of time - get an accurate ETA of landing, she's only got hand baggage (my credit card hopes), can time pick up so I don't need to find a park. If I used google maps, pretty sure I could time the trip across town very accurately too.
Related topic kind of, bored on flight last night (A320) my phone GPS works fine when in window seat - got fixes on 20 satellites. Using GPS apps (GPS essentials and a marine GPS app) could display SOG, altitude with reasonable accuracy, vertical climb, but also cabin pressure in hPa but also converted to altitude equivalent (about = 7700 ft when at cruise at 38,000ft), and plot the position on a background map. If the pilot got lost - I'd have known <g>. Actually kind of nice on a clear night - can be hard to pick up what landmarks/lights are.
Fred99:If on one of the midnight ones, I met one yesterday morning. Crazy tasman winds at present had them in 40mins early. Out front of the sudima and the temp park bay beside the old light tower are often empty for those flights if you wanna sit on the side of the road with a heater going :) Makes for quick scoot to the loop for pickup.
