iistudio:

must have tried it 2 times before with $150 both turned down, waste of time

would rather ask at airport counter.

I pretty sure it's $299 to upgrade at the gate for trans tasman from economy to PE.

kryptonjohn: That will never work these days. They'll offer any freebies to gold/elite koru etc first.

Op Upgrades on Air NZ are incredibly rare. You have a higher chance of seeing Santa than getting a free upgrade simply by asking.

I was successful with minimum bid for PE to Business Akl-Hong Kong and LA-Akl, but unsuccessful Heathrow to LA.
Although I am gold which did add a weighting to my bid.

At the end of the day OneUp's rank at the very bottom of the list when it comes to upgrades. You have no real idea how your bid compares to others and the only reason you'd submit one is if you don't know an Elite to lodge a fixed price Elite APD upgrade for you.

The vast majority of OneUp upgrades will never clear, and there is no certainly at all that any OneUp upgrades will even clear on any particular flight. Premium cabins are more often than not full on most flights to North American routes and even those with RU's struggle at times to have those clear.

Here's my Air NZ upgrade guide I wrote a few months ago if anybody wants to read a little more - https://traveltalk.nz/news-opinion/frequent-flyer-news/definitive-guide-air-new-zealand-upgrades/

After reading through some more things, I decided against it and will be happy and content with my $39 seat upgrade I paid when I booked in order to get a seat that has no one in front of me

That's what I look for - an exit row so I can stretch out my legs. However (on long haul flights not originating in the US) people tend to hang around in these areas which can be an annoying invasion of your space.

I just got Economy to Premium Economy on Saigon to Auckland for $400.

I have Koru but no other Air NZ status at all other than basic Airpoints.
