I can still remember the 3 tube CRT projectors they had on planes with "the movie" displayed for any passenger close enough to view on the one screen at the front. Also add in the headphones that inevitably would only work in one ear and it really was a lackluster experience.

My first and only experience of the 767/747 running NZ1/NZ2 in 1999 was this too :)

IFE in terms of an airframer is COTS he just has to interface to and the airliners get what they order (or use for retrofit).

Went on an Emirates A380 in First Class yesterday and I must admit the inflight show had a resolution of around 360p and the systems would lag horribly. Couldn't even scrub through songs or movies.
I thought the A380 was the latest and greatest. I noted that their 777's are much better.

Sounds like a 12 years old 1st Gen IFE. So ... time to retrofit? (or to order the A380plus)

Emirates typically don't refit their aircraft. They simply keep them for their useful life for them (around 12 years) and then retire the aircraft. This is why they still have so many old cabins around.

Singapore Airlines are similar - their first A380 that got retired a few months ago had never had a refit.
