Many thanks for all the replies. The current plan is now:

- transfer photos and videos from GoPro to iphone using the lightening to USB 3 camera adapter.

- where she has internet, this will upload files to icloud (with a 200GB icloud plan and photos optimised switched on)

- also transfer files to WD mypassport wireless as a 'local' backup for when no internet.

- delete files off SD card when files have uploaded to icloud.

A bit expensive relative to some of the other options, but she flies out in a week and there's no time to get stuff from overseas.

Not completely failsafe - but best in the circumstances??

Turn on google photos while you’re there. So it’s in iCloud and google photos. And if you’re really paranoid Flickr (1tb for free). It’s just upload data youlll be paying for then.

I've often asked this question and the answer is usually "take a small old laptop".

But, this on Amazon looks quite good - includes a card reader and USB port for a portable drive. So, combined with a number of USB sticks would make a good backup solution for travelling

I'd copy to hard drive first then iPhone next.

Much more likely to be mugged for your iPhone than hard drive and if you are busy your most likely to only backup once and if phone is first backup point of call, your more likely to loose photos.

But I'm in the get old crappy laptop camp with spare portable USB HD

I have an older ravpower with a card slot and storage, and its the app that lets it down. It needs you to use the app to control the file copy across from the card to other storage (either internal or a USB drive you connect) - that app keeps stalling out, leaving some files copied and some not, has issues dealing with duplicates etc. If theyve fixed the app in the last 3 years it might be good, but look for some current reviews to see the workflow and if they ever did anything like using it to move 500+ images over in one shot.

Also no exfat support on my one so useless with 64gb+ cards which will be in exfat if formatted in a device.

As an aside to this, its a shame that you can't just use an Ipad Mini for example as a device to transfer files between a card reader and an ext hard drive. That seems like a massive design flaw in the concept of the Ipad. Otherwise it could easily negate having to travel with a laptop.

Maybe too obvious for the design team, but really useful to the rest of us who aren't so wedded to "the cloud".

I'd say it's a design feature, not a flaw. Apple always want to control how users use their devices. ALthough I hear that the latest version has some from of file explorer?

Buy a very cheap second hand disposable laptop. If only they still made the Asus eePC netbooks.

if visiting a retail shop first make sure you ask them first don’t just help yourself as they maybe worried about viruses I helped myself once and the shop assistant asked what i was doing i just oh I’m almost finished

You can..but you have to buy their connection kit which is an sd card to lightning cable.

In the same way most android tablets use an otg cable. Most dont have an sd slot. Of course a $3 otg cable is much more cost effective than a $60 Apple Cable.

Could this be a user case for a PC stick? Most tvs in hotels these days are HDMI, so pc stick and bt keyboard/mouse/USB hub/hdd

I connect a USB hub to my Android phone using an OTG (On The Go) cable, connect the camera/GoPro and a 1TB USB HDD to the hub, and then use a file explorer app to copy from the camera/GoPro to the HDD. Not lightning fast, but effective for backing up memory cards. Ditch the iPhone ;-)

Just an update on my Ravpower Filehub purchase...

A great device on paper, but the one delivered to me was DOA - it seems to be charging (it gets warm) but no amount of button-presssing can coax any life out of it. The Amazon seller wouldn't ship a replacement to NZ (even though they happily shipped the original here), but were happy to refund without me returning it. Looking at the reviews, they get quite a few DOA items and quite a few more that fail after a short time.

I've received the refund, so no great cause for complaint. I've also dismantled the item and tried to figure out what's wrong but my electronics isn't good enough. Shame, because it would be very useful if it worked
