Ive been there for a few Thanksgivings. Including driving non stop from Grand Canyon to mid Louisiana. We HAD to get back. IMHO they will all be at home, they have to be. Its bigger than Christmas IMHO. I'd expect airports to reflect that, at least for American travellers.

'Transitting' through LAX is hideous. Last time I did it it took two hours in the arrival hall to get through security. The whole flight was delayed.

I've never gone back to LAX as an international traveller.

I go through Asia now. Preferable Singapore.

One plus (hopefully) would be we might travel auckland to LA, go to Disneyland then fly on to Heathrow, then return and "transit" heathrow to auckalnd via LA.

Any immigration questions would be asked on entering on the outward leg so hopefully when return 10 days later, all questions should have been addressed.

Or am I being hopelessly optimistic ?

No tickets bought yet, the other half wants to go through travel agent rather than the usual internet.

If you're not stopping in LA on the way back, you'd be far better to come back via Asia, eg Singapore with Air NZ codesharing with SIA

LA is alright if you're stopping there for a reason, but doing it for transit is just masochism

LAX is a horrible place that I will not miss. Changi (Singapore) has some nice spots. A free "lounge" with nice chairs, wall sockets and dim lights just by the cinema and outdoor garden for instance.

If I were traveling to somewhere like London (or one of the other major airports with direct flights via Singapore) I would probably choose that. Since all my flights to Europe from NZ end up in Oslo, its a lot nicer to fly with an airline that lets me fly Auckland -> Hub -> Oslo. Which means Emirates with their A380 between Auckland and Dubai (non-stop), and 777-300 from Dubai to Oslo.

Being able to fly on a bigger airplane for the long distance between Auckland and Dubai really makes the trip nicer.

The new airport in Hong Kong is not bad either, and if it was important to fly with Air New Zealand that would be the route I would be taking.

Oh for the good old days pre 911. If you were flying United to the UK from Auckland the passengers travelling on to London would be put in a small but comfortable transit lounge that had toilets, hand basins, shaver points, & comfortable seating. Then a United person would come and get the passengers, take them through some empty corridors, & put you into the actual departure lounge for the LAX to LHR flight. So easy.

I'm leaning towards Singapore route with anz code share and have small break in transit hotel.
