There certainly used to be some surprisingly good cafes at Mapua

Yes, and I hear Mapua is now only clothing optional for a month or two each year. I'm just not sure which months....

LOL, that's not an incentive. In my experience, the wrong type of people want to run around with no clothes on.

LOL sorry - I meant it as a warning, not a sightseeing suggestion!

don't worry ... IIRC, the "good" cafe's (Smokehouse cafe? ... located on the Mapua wharf) and the 'campground' were well out of eyesight of each other.

@mikeaqua can you recommend somewhere that has decent screens and isn't stupidly noisy to watch the Blues-Crusaders on Saturday night?

We have dinner at TMK same night.

I went to nelson for the first time a month or so ago.

Neat little town. Had a wander around the CBD, visited a local beach, went to thai restaurant and movies (had my boy with me who was there for a sports tournament).

The only negative was thrifty. I'd ordered a holden commodore due to recent knee surgery. Turned up at the thrifty airport desk and met the very unfriendly agent who was obviously pissed off with me arriving on the late flight.

The agent said the commodore was unavailable , and I had been allocated a kia sportage.  I said that it was too small and i needed the larger car due to my knee surgery . The thrifty agent literally sneered and said I should be thankful as the sportage is a class upgrade (how on earth could a sportage be considered an upgrade from a commodore???).

Really I didn't care if it was made of gold because it was still unsuitable.  I again repeated that the sportage was unsuitable but the guy really didn't give a crap and didn't offer any kind of compromise (like coming back and doing a swap).

Took the keys, walking out to the rental cars and was about to cross the pedestrian crossing when the same thrifty agent roared through the crossing at speed and completely failed to stop or take care. Admittedly it was  dark so maybe he did not see us. Regardless the guy was a real jerk.

And the sportage was pretty bad too, they are quite high and the foot well is small which made it very uncomfortable due to my leg being in a straight splint.   Would have been fine were it not for the knee.

So, while Nelson is a very nice place, please avoid thrifty!!! At least one of their agents will treat you like dirt.

Hopgoods is amazing if you want top quality food.

Head up the Abel Tasman if you have time, and if it's a nice day - you can boat one way, both ways, part of the way....Sea Shuttle are the go for that.

There aren't that many 'Touristy' things to do in Nelson really. Happy Valley is cool, if you like blatting around on quad bikes and massive flying foxes.

There are tons of great places to walk and mountain bike, but depends if you're into that or not.

Rubgy at mine on Saturday.....Haha. In Nelson 623 in the City or Speights Ale House are both good, and shouldn't be too noisy at that time on a Saturday.

The bar at the New Street Steakhouse is my preferred option.  OK selcetion of drinks

Also OK is 623 In The city. It has a lot of screens but it can be hard to find a seat with a good view of one.

Disclaimer: A a Highlander I'm typically not watching Crusader's games, so I'm not sure how busy/loud it will be.

Although I did watch the Highlanders vs Crusaders at 623 In The City this season and it wasn't that busy.

I just checked the menu at Cod and Lobster. I am literally lost for words that there is NOT ONE Lobster Dish, on the menu at ALL.

I am wondering if the meals are served by Lobsters? Is the Chef a Lobster? Owner?

Hahaha fair point!

We started with a massive seafood platter, Muscles, scallops, smoked salmon, calamari, etc. A dozen oysters. And then steak for mains. Was scotch fillet from memory... maybe eye fillet?

Cocktails were choice too. They made this awesome spiced rum, coke, lime thing - can't remember the name. Oh and espresso martini for desert!

Now that I think about... maybe the excessive drinking made it more awesome. The seafood platter and oysters were really good - i hadn't had oysters like that before.

Nelson has a very good restaurant called Urban Eatery. The offer a selection of three different types of oysters - very good.

Also, there is a little store front bakery that sells nice calzones at a very reasonable price. I believe it is located near the corner of Bridge st and Trafalgar st (near the cathedral).
