For long trips I use

Can use it for everything from a multi day hiking trip tents to a multi week traveling bag. You can compress it down crazy small or release the compression straps and fit an amazing amount of stuff. Tent sleeping bag food sleeping mat cooker etc.

Ryanair accepted it as a carry-on and they are pretty strict.

Luggage is a very personal thing. What one person may love will be hated by others.

Despite all my travel I still pack too many things for trips, but I'm also relatively risk adverse when it comes to travel in general and if I am checking a bag for example will also take what I could need to survive for 36 hours in my carry on should my bags not turn up.

Same here, I have enough to have one set of fresh clothes in my carryon (it's not called a Titan backpack for nothing). Then there's a checklist of things I've needed in the past, apart from the obvious stuff, toothbrush, shaver, etc there's washing powder, MREs (One Square Meal bricks), plastic spoons, a small multitool that includes scissors, tweezers, and a screwdriver, some fishing line, etc. You sort of build this up from experience over different trips, I've got it fairly well tuned by now in that I haul a minimum of unnecessary stuff around. Mrs Neb, OTOH...

Does that fit in carry compartment of small planes? Or big planes only. Thanks

I've had no issues on Airbus 320s operated by Air NZ, Jetstar and Qatar—the smallest aircraft I've taken that bag on so far. Will see what it's like on an upcoming trip to/from Nelson on an ATR 72 (operated by Air NZ) and Q300 (Jetstar). But I don't imagine any issues as it fits in the 320 bag hold with plenty of room to spare.
