neb: As I mentioned above, try Zoomy. They're like Uber, but with ethics.

Dude, I prefer Zoomy as well. Thing is, they only operate in the 3 major cities. See https://zoomy.co.nz/passengers

Honestly, I wish they would advertise more. They really need to grow their market share. Start in cities not yet covered by Uber. There are very few passengers that I can pick up & often I have to drive 7-10min for a pickup. Uber passengers most of the time are 3-5min away.

CokemonZ:

Be careful wit this. Booking an uber essentially means they activate your booking 15 mins or so before you want to ride.

If there is no one around to accept it, no ride for you. It's not like a taxi where they pre-allocate it to someone, and they know.

I live in a pretty uber friendly area, but missed a 6:30am flight as no uber showed at my booked time (5am)

Are you sure about this? I've booked several 4am rides to the airport this way from the North Shore where there are typically no Ubers around at that time and never had an issue so far. Granted I normally do this several days ahead.

If it really does just schedule it for a future time then what's the point? How far ahead did you book that Uber, at 6am?

I booked the night before. To be fair that was probably 18 months ago now, and I've been so put off I have never tried it at a risky time again.

I asked another driver on a scheduled pickup how it worked, and he said it just popped up like a normal request. No reason to doubt - but no proof either i guess.

It works well in an uber friendly area at an uber friendly time.

Zoomy isn't really a serious competitor for Uber. They've just seriously struggled to gain market share or drivers. Having reinvented their business numerous times over the years (they started off just relying on partnering with taxi companies) I'm really surprised they're still around.

For those who have a moral compass and don't like Uber then Ola is the only real alternative, however despite all their advertising and pricing that undercuts Uber most drivers only get a fraction of their work from Ola and most still rely on Uber.
